In O’Henry’s short story “The Gift of The Magi,” Della demonstrates self-sacrifice because she displays much love for her husband. Her love for Jim causes her to do anything possible, such as bargaining for Jim’s Christmas gift. Della desperately needs money for Jim’s gift because she hopes for his happiness and joy during the holidays. Although Della has a low quality coat and unsown hat, she sets her love for Jim and his happiness above anything else. Jim’s joyful reaction for his present embodies Della’s hopes for this Christmas. Sacrificing her most prized possession out of love for her husband, Della cuts and sells her hair for money. The money she receives will be used in the deed of buying Jim’s Christmas gift.
