Sacrifice In Julia

The act of sacrificing for a greater cause takes courage, bravery and determination because it puts the wellbeing of somebody else above yourself. The excerpt Julia, written by Lillian Hellman, exemplifies a sacrifice filled with love and fear. In my own experience, when someone makes a sacrifice for you, they put aside their happiness and might do things that are outside of their comfort zones to benefitting an individual. Giving something up for the greater good of someone else takes away the happiness and freedom of an individual and replaces it with the determination to continue the overwhelming sacrifice they have decided to take on. In the short story, Julia, written by Lillian Hellman, there are two lifelong friends: Lilly and Julia. …show more content…

Courage is not something that is integrally human, especially in times of war when one’s life is at most risk. This time is when ones integrity is challenged the most: there are few who hope to preserve this integrity and their humanity through altruistic acts in times when kindness is a mirage. When most people’s foremost thoughts are of their self-preservation, altruism preserves and strengthens ones integrity and humanity when one risks their life for the survival of others and keeps their honor intact. In the novel The Cellist of Sarajevo, Canadian author Steven Galloway illustrates the internal moral crisis people face when confronted with their own mortality and the pain and suffering of those worse off. Appearances can often be deceiving, as often times in today’s judgemental society people hide who they are to avoid judgement. In many classic American novels, the characters do the same. In John Steinbeck 's Of Mice and Men, Lennie appears very much a classic “tough guy.” In Ernest Hemingway 's The Old Man and The Sea, Santiago is viewed as being dangerously unlucky, as well as strange. In The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Jay Gatsby seems to the public the picture of success and happiness.…

Harvesting Native Americans: The Theme of Unwilling Sacrifice in “The Sin Eaters” Sherman Alexie’s “The Sin Eaters”, a short story found within The Toughest Indian in the World, tells the story of a young boy named Jonah and his presentiment dreams about war that ultimately come true. In this short story, Native Americans from all parts of the country are stripped from their reservations, bused to prison-like camps, and utilized against their will by the government. When reflecting on this text, I find a theme of unwarranted sacrifice to be prevalent throughout many points of the story. This idea of forced sacrifice ties into the overall message of Alexie’s “The Sin Eaters”, and strengthens the image of loss and pain that indigenous cultures have faced due to colonialism and the American government. The first part of the short story that I find the theme of sacrifice to clearly come into view is when Jonah and many other Native Americans are taken by military forces from their homes.…

“Sacrifices have to be made” Acts Of Sacrifice By: Lars Jorgensen In Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe our main character Okonkwo is constantly facing sacrifices that must be made to improve the lives of his people and himself. Taking a man's life in order to not look weak is not the true meaning of sacrifice, its giving apart of you to the world around you for a benefit for you or your peers. Everyone has responsibilities that have to be carried or else some sort of consequence will occur sooner or later, and with those responsibilities come sacrifices. For example maybe you have a essay due at 11:59 but you really want to go out with your friends to hangout, so therefore you have to make a sacrifice either go hangout with your friends and get a bad grade or turn it in and get a good grade, so therefore you have to see what you”ll gain or lose from the outcome of…
