During the Victorian era, many authors published their works in installments, called serials. Charles Dickens published A Tale of Two Cities in serials to engage the readers in each installment, as well as in the entire novel. To secure an audience, the author must provide hooks and cliffhangers, such as suspense or drama. The main aspect of this novel is the compelling subject of sacrificing for love and life. Throughout A Tale of Two Cities, Charles Dickens effectively uses the theme of sacrifice to show the reader the significance of life through the characters of Miss Pross, Dr. Manette, and Sydney Carton.
