Supplemental Questions 1) Coming from a low-income, Mexican-American family and being a first generation college student, I have struggled to pay for tuition and fees in the past. Community Colleges David Hosansky in his article about the idea of the federal government offering students with free tuition focuses on the impacts the program has on students. The proposal to offer government funded tuition to students that maintain 2.5 grade point may affect other community students who may be forced to drop out of college before they graduate. Hosansky points out that critics have argued that the plan initiated by Obama seems costly to implement and the middle class students may become the main beneficiaries of the program. Community colleges are regarded as institutions that are attended by the poor to help them through their four years in collage. Education For Everyone Education is something that everyone should be able to have. Knowledge is not something that should be for sale. Everyone should be able to have equal opportunity. This is why there should be no cost for receiving a college education. The general argument made by Carol Roth in the article “Free Community College Isn’t Free...and it’s a Bad Idea” is that saying that college will be free when it really won’t, and it will cause more problems and evidently not solve any current problems.…

This would provide a higher education to be more accessible to people who want to further their education. Pain quotes Obama, “To make sure that community college was accessible to everyone…free for everybody who’s willing to work for it” (Para 2). The plan was based upon Tennessee’s Promise, where ninety percent of its 60,000 graduates from high school from 2013 were signed up by the state for a new scholarship for community college (Pain para 7).…

My past laid out upon a table. My GPA, my resume, my test scores. An unfamiliar man whom I met for the first time was frowning, turning around in his creaky red chair, while hurriedly trying to contextualize my life with just a few pieces of paper. For 15 minutes, he sat there, unhappy, tapping his foot, analyzing what I’ve “done” with my life. He took a sip of water and suggested that I go to community college.…

Revamping Community College In the article “Revamping Community Colleges to Improve Graduation Rates” it talks about ways that people of education are working to help improve the graduation rate. While I am all for more people going to college and getting degrees, I do not agree with the changes that the article suggests. One of the changes that they are trying to enforce is the idea of free college. In the article, it states that “Bills are pending to carry out President Obama’s America’s College Promise proposal to make community colleges free to responsible high school graduates.”…

Having free community college encourages high school graduates to pursue a higher education. Tuitions and fees for four-year institutions have increased by 3.4 percent each year from 2005 and 2015 (Morris). The increasing cost of tuition for four-year universities turns away students from automatically going to a university, thus leading them to go to a community college instead. However, they still run into some financial troubles there. Students are most likely to apply for a community college if the government reduces the paperwork they have to fill out for financial aid (Goral).…

College Is Not the Key to Success In College is a Waste of Time and Money by Caroline Bird she explains how college was a good place for a few kids that were drawn to their academic work, but now it is stupid for kids to go to college when all they are doing is wasting their time and money. Bird is right, the only reason they go to college is to make their parents happy not for the education part. She explains that young adults in college are sad, mostly because they are just thrown into the real world without knowing what is going to happen next. They do not know what is best for them so they think going to college will help them get a better job in the long run. Most teachers, engineers, and even nurses said they do not use what they…

During lecture, the professor would also tell us little stories (that were still very much on topic) that has to do with whatever topic that he was talking about. These stories would range from things that has happened during his work experiences before becoming a professor to when he was still an undergrad attending the same institution as we were. These stories that he would share to us had really helped me stay awake and focused during class considering it was a very early morning class that started at eight-thirty. I believe that this style of teaching is very rare and most professors I’ve taken and even to this very moment, here at UC Davis chooses to utilize. Professors tend to feel very distant to me, in terms of the materials that they…
