Saco Museum Proposal

Decent Essays
Would it be possible for me to spend time at the Saco Museum this summer, as a volunteer? I hope to learn more about how museums work, and how exhibits are designed and displayed. I would be available at the beginning of July through the rest of the summer.
Volunteering at the museum would also allow me to be more involved in my community. I am a member of the Portland Maine Youth String Concert, member of my school’s tennis and film club, and was published by Maine Public’s Raise Your Voice.
I will be a sophomore at Cheverus High School in Portland, and live in Biddeford. I am very interested in history and art, and considering a career in art history. My parents and I have visited several art museums, including the Isabella Stuart Gardener

The Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture, Tillicum Village excursion and Duwamish Longhouse and Cultural Center of Seattle are institutions that are vastly different in their designs, missions and intentions. The Burke Museum, while making progressive changes towards greater inclusion of Native voices requires improvement in greater understanding and sympathy for issues of repatriation. For Tillicum Village, a focus toward education rather than entertainment would combat the cultural commodification that occurs at the site. For the Duwamish Longhouse and Cultural Center, an acknowledgment of legal tribal status would allow for their appeals for repatriation and a sense of recognition as a community. I was quite shocked that I actually enjoyed my visit to the Japanese American National Museum in little Toyko. In other words, I was honestly not interested in learning the particular history of Japanese Americans because I believed there was not much to learn but I was certainly wrong which is why I certainly do not regret the fact that I decided to visit this museum especially with a few of my classmates. It was quite nice, it not only had nice paintings that were perfect backgrounds for Instagram pictures, but it literally also had glass pink flowers hanging from the ceiling. If that wasn’t enough, a wall of real suit cases that once belonged to people was literally build.…

I was completely clueless about museums and didn't know what to make of them. I went online and read a little about the museum and found out that it was one of the top five museums in the country because of its cultural diversity and integrated urban population. The personnel gave me a brief tour of the museum and told me the museum does not hold gallery collections, but their exhibition is based on a periodic basis. The museum was also filled with visitors and their families, all engaged in a series of photo shoots.…

As a diverse student with a variety of interests and passions, the liberal arts program and energetic community atmosphere at Bates draws me to its campus. I enjoy learning many different subjects and discovering the connections between them all. Recently, my Physics teacher and my Calculus teacher collaborated on a problem the class was assigned and I was able to see how both teachers concurred the same issue from different angles. As a student involved in many school sponsored service events, such as Wreaths Across America and National Honors Society, I am inspired to see that Bates also encourages students to be a part of the Lewiston community. I would be interested getting involved with the Root Cellar volunteers in the community.…

I currently do not have a specific period of art I want to focus on, and am excited to delve deeper into the historical content of art as well as learning about best practices in display and museum management. Outside of academics, I love working with children and have worked with several museum education departments, as well as Jumpstart where I taught literacy skills to preschoolers. Children’s creativity and curiosity is invigorating and inspiring. I enjoy teaching and learning to view life and art in new ways through their eyes. This has caused me to consider focusing on a career in museum education, where I can continue captivating children’s wonder and curiosity by creating and sharing unique museum programming.…
