On November 3, 2016 I went and listened to public speaker, Sable Schultz. Schultz spoke about on the transgender experience at the Community College of Aurora in the Rotunda. This paper critiques Shultz’s speech in terms of: her engagement with her audience, use of power point, gestures and body movement, style, disfluencies, organization, as well as her introduction, main points, body, stance, manner, conclusion, and her overall performance.
To cut to the chase, after reviewing Mrs. Shultz’s speech, it must be said that she is a bit below average as a speaker. While her manner was genuine and authentic, she was not particularly captivating. In fact, one would likely walk away with …show more content…
This failure made it unclear what the major takeaways should have been for the audience. From there, as I continued my experience of her speech, I found that she had a very informative approach. The body of Ms. Shultz’s speech was eye opening at times and did, at least, aid Ms. Shultz in accomplishing her purpose which was: to inform the audience about the transgender experience.
Next, a review on Shultz’s use of PowerPoint. The information was accompanied with visuals, executed with the use of a power point presentation. The power point, while simple, was helpful in enhancing the understanding of the information that was presented.
But, it must be said, while the information was useful, the major critique would be on Shultz’s gestures, body movement, style, and tone. During the entire presentation, Schultz made the mistake of clinging to her podium. This made her seem awkward and uncomfortable in front of the crowd. The lack of body movement decreased from a much needed, friendly and open style. Additionally, her tone could have had a more emotional appeal. Fortunately, Shultz, did not have any disfluencies, and if so they were so few that they went
