"The people in the trees" by Hanya Yanagihara has been an interesting read so far. After reading the first assigned part of the book, the character of Norton Perina peaked my interest. After the reading, it became obvious that Perina is a man who simply doesn’t bother himself much about anyone around him. On pages 26; "..of real worry, of fear that she was not right.. she was mad, genuinely moronic...to frightened to contemplate seriously."…

Naguib Mahfouz’s “Zaabalawi” is a short story about a man in search of the Sheikh Zaabalawi, a “true saint of God” (Mahfouz, 884) and holy man. On the surface, the story is about the narrator’s search for this man, but underneath, it is a metaphor for Mahfouz’s critique of Egyptian society’s relationship with God and Islam. Mahfouz comments on four different sects of society in the work: the elders, the bureaucrats, the artists, and the common man. Each of these different sects reflect a different aspect of the Muslim world, their values, and how they conflict with or complement their relationship with God.…

The Ghost Bomb of the Cold War The height of the Cold War resulted in the closest moments humanity has reached to complete physical annihilation of the planet. Despite the fact that the Cold War did not erupt in a fiery storm of nuclear bombs aimed at enemies across the globe, instead ending in a tense lowering of arms, the residual effects felt around the world have been equally destructive as a nuclear warhead. In this novel courage, not only in a power to survive, but in a power to provide for family, is the most prevalent issue brought about in Hedas retelling of her time in the concentration camps and her time as wife to a communist official. One of the most endearing facts about Heda in her retelling of her experiences is that fact how despite everything that she had observed, participated in, and been subjected to she still remained “human” in that she was not misguided by hate and anger but…

New “Irishness” emerged in the Late 1990’s with the rise of the Celtic Tiger. A surging national economy helped to rapidly transform an Irish society. Not only was the Irish culture to change, this also lead to major changes in the landscape and urban areas particularly in Dublin.
