[Romesh was born in 1963. His home country is Guyana, which is located in South America. He grew up living a simple lifestyle with his two parents and his three brothers and two sisters. His “call name” or nickname as it is known in America was Bai. He got his high school education in Guyana and when he was 21, immigrated to America in 1986 , where his older brother was already living. America is perfection, it’s a paradise. People who live there must have a very luxurious life, with tons of money, and a fancy house and car. There life is perfect and so easy, they do not have to work hard for anything; all the opportunities in the world are there, waiting for them. Or at least so I thought. When arriving in Texas, it was mesmerizing, even at one in the morning. It was the first time that we had seen a place so well developed. There were stop signs, stop lights, and signs telling us when we could and could not walk. Our tour guide had left us right on the sidewalk because his only job was to get us to America and here we were, so his job was accomplished. Now, this being our first time seeing a sign that told us when we could and couldn't walk was very different and confusing. Our group waited at that stop sign for about an hour before realizing that we could cross. We had no idea how the system worked. We all saw a do not walk sign and thought walking across the road was forbidden for the time being.
