Sabancaya
The volcano I choose to write about is none other than the Sabancaya volcano. It is located in the Andes mountains in Peru. This particular volcano is a stratovolcano part of a collection of three glacially covered volcanoes. The elevation of the Sabancaya volcano is 5967 meters high and it is the smallest of the three, however, it happens to be the most active. Volcanic ash and gases are the products of the aforementioned volcano in the various eruptions that have been documented. The last known eruption date started on July 9th, 2015 with the appearance of emission of magmatic gases, and has since continued through December …show more content…
Holocene activity has consisted of plinian eruptions followed by emission of voluminous andesitic and dacitic lava flows, which form an extensive apron around the volcano on all sides but the south. Records of historical eruptions date back to 1750” (Global Volcanism Program). It cannot be said for certain when the volcano’s early activity started simply due to the lack of record-keeping prior to the eighteenth century, as well as the general lack of technology that could have been used to measure volcanic activity in earlier history. During the recorded 1988 activity, “Lavas erupted from vents in the erosional amphitheater on the northern flanks of Hualca Hualca have entered the Rio Majes canyon in the past and dammed it completely - the satellite images show flat-lying lake sediments deposited behind a breached dam, which also forms a prominent nick-point in the …show more content…
It was only in 1995 that Johan Reinhard discovered her remains and brought her body down to Arequipa, where it is on display in the city’s Museo Santuarios Andinos” (Wicks). It is thought that she was sacrificed as a religious offering, although it can only be speculation. She was discovered only due to the volcano’s eruptions melting the almost permanent ice cap in 1995. Moreover, one species of bird that attracts attention to tourists, natives, etc. is the Condor, which is a bird that cannot make nay sounds due to the lack of a larynx. This bird is often a religious symbol of the Andean people. Other animals native of the volcanic area in Peru include the Lamas, Alpacas, Vicuñas and Guanacos. (Granyia) Furthermore, the Sabancaya volcano is considered one of the top three most dangerous volcanoes in Peru “among Coropuna and El Misti” (Wick). It was regarded by scientists as such due to the constant activity and magnitude of such activity with the prospect of future devastation after an
