Key issues
Currently, there are two key issues that are greatly hindering the sales of Google Glass in the retail market. Firstly, Google Glass wearers are not seen as trustworthy by the general public, as they can record and take pictures easily without notification. This issue has lead to the disallowance of glass in some areas, as well as negative media attention towards Google. The second and smaller issue is the competition from more advanced and home oriented devices such as Oculus Rift, which are a much more obvious choice for at home use of VR/AR technology. Together, these issues have reduced the popularity of Google Glass greatly, despite it being a useful and innovative product.
Analysis
Analysis using decision tools has exposed some major problems in the external factors influencing Google Glass, as well as strengths Google Glass can capitalize on to fix their main issues. According to general internal analysis done with the value proposition canvas(Appendix 2), Google Glass offers value to its customers that cannot be matched by any competitors. This value is created through offering a wearable technology that fully functions outside the home, provides instant information, and offers smartphone features, albeit for a slightly higher price than competitors. These weaknesses include the lack of vision correction, a lack of transparency on data collection, as well as a lack of privacy for the general public. Along with revealing weaknesses that make Glass incompatible with retail, the SWOT revealed a unique threat for Google Glass in Oculus Rift. Rift offers a much more advanced display than Glass, which immerses the user into the device, making it a much more useful option for domestic VR
