STAR Format

Decent Essays
The situation, task, action, result (STAR) format is a job interview technique used by interviewers to determine the capability of an applicant for a job. Police interview boards use the STAR format to determine if an applicant is proficient in the 18 competencies required to be a police constable in Canada. If I address and solve the conflict with my roommate, I will be able to prove I am competent in conflict management. My response using the STAR format will be as follows:
S (Situation): My roommate was eating my specialty candies that I have been buying for myself. I am infatuated with these candies and I must drive to Calgary to buy them because they are so rare. I could not hide the candies from my roommate because they need to be refrigerated

I also want us to have a positive relationship as we would be living together for the near future. To do this I had to make sure I was not accusatory towards my roommate but still emphasized on the importance of the candies to me.
A (Action): I decided that I was going to discuss the topic with my roommate in a positive and calm environment. After class, my roommate and I went to the cafeteria for some food, after some talks I brought up the topic of him eating my candies. I explained the rarity of the candies to him and that the candies serve an important purpose in my college life.
R (Result): My roommate was surprisingly open minded and apologetic regarding the topic. He explained that he did not know much I valued the candies and that they were easily found. My roommate ended up asking where he could buy these candies for himself, so he would not have to take any of mine. I believe that the result of the conflict strengthened our relationship instead of damaging it. In the future I can now use the techniques I learned from this conflict to solve my own conflicts in the future as well as the conflicts I may encounter in the field as a police

It is in this session that I helped the client to focus on the wider issues around the problem. This I achieved through challenging the client positively by asking him if he thought whether the situation would still have ended the same way it was if he did things differently. I also inquired whether he thought there were reasons that made the individual behave the way she did. These questions also allowed my client to express his emotions regarding the situation which would be helpful for him since he would be able to release the tension he had concerning the situations. This was through talking about the thoughts and the feelings he had stored in his mind.…
