“Humanism is a perspective that emphasizes the potential for good that is innate to all humans” (OpenStax, 2017 pg. 13). With this perspective in mind when the chicken came to the road he noticed that there were baby chicks that were too scared to cross the road alone so he decided to do some good and lead them across the…
Before starting this project I came across an article from Huffington Post called Beyond the Conservative/Liberal Catholic Divide, written by Matthew N. Schmalz. My first time reading this article I thought that Schmalz was just writing about the different stereotypes in the catholic religion and that it is possible to be a liberal catholic, which originally sparked my interest. As a liberal I never knew that we could even participate in the Catholic Church, due to my views on Gay Marriage and abortion. Little did I know that there was so much more than just another thing that liberals and conservatives con not come to similar terms on from a local Catholic Church. As a community Saint Thomas Aquinas University Parish practices forgiveness and acceptance for some more than others.…
I truly believe that to understand this world, we must review the three important things that happened with mankind: we were created, we failed and God offers redemption to us. I also believe that in order to fulfill our own purpose of why God created us, we must have a servant attitude. Serving others is serving God himself since He is the creator of everything we see. And lastly, I believe that every human being on this earth has the potential to be redeemed by God. To be redeemed, that person needs only to ask and then follow God.…
Our Lady of the Lake College is a Catholic institution that was created in honor of St. Francis of Assisi, who firmly believed that all of creation spoke volumes of God’s love for us. St. Francis was raised in a fairly wealthy family, and it was not until he was captured at battle for two years, that he decided to embark on the glorious journey of knowing Jesus Christ. He began preaching to word of God, and embraced others that were not of his kind. Students who attend Our Lady of the Lake College should be of the same example to others throughout their academic careers. As Franciscans, We live by five core values that are service, reverence and love for all of life, joyfulness of spirit, humility, and justice.…

My religious community has played a profound role on my development as an adult, the three guiding principals of Zoroastrianism: "Good Thoughts, Good Deeds, and Good Words" guide my actions daily. Being part of such a small community while heightening my sense of being has also made me more appreciative and understanding of other cultures & groups. For me understanding others has become a key component in understanding myself. My community has also enabled me to be a better communicator- as often times questions are asked regarding my ethnicity and religion where I can act as a spokesperson for the…

My reason for contact of this individual was to fulfill the assignment for PYCL 632 Social & Cultural Foundations of Counseling, and to further my understanding and aptitude for analyzing a specific case in multicultural mental health counseling. Alejandra Lopez is a 40-year old single, divorced female from Ponce, Puerto Rico with a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting. She was raised Catholic but is now a self-described recovering Catholic with an agnostic proclivity. We met in 2002 while I was the Director of a Sylvan Learning Center in Tampa, Florida. I decided to interview Alejandra due to the fact that she is a multicultural female of Puerto Rican descent and cultural heritage who relocated from the Island of Puerto Rico to raise her children…
As a child I’ve grown up hearing the vibrations of tower bells ringing and the smell of incense that would surround the church, when that occurred I knew I would be reunited with my creator, yet again. As I begin to walk towards the church I began to notice such monumental door look down at me, once I extended my hand to greet the door I walked in. As my foot caressed the church floor the Holy Spirit entered me as I did the sign of the cross, the Holy Spirit was anxious to see its son, my soul. On this Sunday morning I knew that those around me would become by brothers and sisters, and that we would harmonize as a family. The culture of Hispanic Catholics has formed the backbone for Hispanic culture, and has impacted my personal life by refining my mentality.…
Civic engagement in college courses is gaining popularity among liberal arts colleges across the nation. With college courses’ reconstruction to take a civic-based approach to education, one must determine the content educators need to deliver and what will be permitted to be taught, first and foremost, for education to be successful in the production of effective and virtuous citizens. The content to which we instruct our students is at the center of many debates about implementing a civic-based approach to education. David L. Palmer argues that having a lesson plan to instruct students by “employing civic participation in college instruction enriches the practices of both education and democracy” .…
Humanity is the most important factor that sets us apart from the rest of creation. The ability to feel a variety of emotions, to grip vastly complex concepts, and to feel compassion and empathy toward our fellow man is what puts us a notch above the savage animals in the wild. Our humanity is our ability to grasp all the things that make us human, like love and a moral conscience. However, our humanity is not perfect.…
Why do you want to be a retreat leader? I would like to help people to have a true understanding of their faith. Many people are unsure of themselves, if they even want to be Catholic. I want to go help them with any questions that they might have. I also have an experience to share that I will highlight below (#8).…
Humanity simply means being a human. The word humanity has a positive outlook on our society to most. Its the ability to empathize and sympatheize for one another to improve another human's life. Many people feel dehumanized because of historic situations and the lack of control they have among their own life. Columbus stated "As soon as I arrived in the Indies, on the first Island which I found, I took some of the natives by force in order that they might learn and might give me information of whatever there is in these parts.…
In the movie I, Robot we are introduced to a long debated philosophical question: “What makes a human being human?”. Is the essence of mankind the fact that we are biologically unique among the myriad of different species on this planet? Is it the fact that we seem to have transcended our baser needs in order to try and make the world fit us as opposed to us fitting into the world around us? Is it perhaps that we have what people would call a “soul”? Or is it possibly that we were said to have either evolved from our animal counterparts, the primates, in order to be what we consider better?…
Marywood has built itself on standards of empowerment, service, excellence, Catholic identity, and respect. In two works, “A Good Man” and “Still I Rise,” empowerment is a significant factor. Empowerment has many different facets, all of which are equally important. It can be spread and received. If an individual can figure out how to empower, they can help themselves while helping others.…
