SIU Cheerleaders

After the flags passed, two baton twirlers preceded the rest of the SIU cheerleaders. The baton twirlers performed a coordinated routine which started with the music played by the Salukis Marching band. These two twirlers rotated their batons very fast, then they tossed them into the air and jumped to catch it before it dropped to the floor. Then three rows of cheerleaders who were wearing a very sophisticated uniform made with the SIU colors, maroon, black and white, passed. Their uniforms are beautiful, their tops are divided in two sections, one section is maroon, the other is black with a very delicate white embroidery with an asymmetrical shape, the same top motif is used for the belt that covers most of the cheerleaders' midriffs. The bottoms are loose black shorts that match perfectly with the top. They all were wearing pantyhose and white tennis. All the cheerleaders combed their hair with the same style, and they were wearing the same make-up, my guess is that those choices were made in order to give to this group a kind of uniformity and cohesion among the members. Finally they have two pom poms, one on each hand, the pom poms were silver and maroon which matched also with the uniform. The choreography was performed in a repetition of hands up, hands down, both hands to the side, then each hand move to each side. …show more content…

In both groups, there was mixture of races, mostly of Caucasian, African American and Latino. However, all the members of these groups were slim, in good physical shape or athletic. There was not any overweighted person performing in any of the aforementioned

However, others contend that cheerleading outfits are a tradition and are fine just how they are. That’s not even half of what cheerleading is. If you don’t consider that a sport, then hopefully I can give you some insight why me along with many others around the nation consider cheer a sport.…
