1. What is the problem? What were the underlying causes of this problem? The problem was that SFO airport had compromised security with their existing credentialing system and physical identity & access management system (PIAM). Increase in low cost airlines and other vendors resulted in surge of passengers and SFO did not have the infrastructure to accommodate such a surge, without undertaking significant adjustments and resulting in a proposal of reopening the Terminal 2. It was vital that a strong case be made for a new automated TSA compliant security system. Senior management needed to be convinced, or the proposed methodology would not get a green light. What improvements will be made? The first improvement will be an integrated system that issued credentials, managed rules and modified or retracted access when the role was changed or terminated. This is important because it means faster updates & no delays. The second improvement will be improved compliance that could mitigate potentially serious security risks. Third, any changes or additions to rules, workflows and policies with respect to airport security in the future, can be incorporated easily because of SAFE's flexible system architecture without costly upkeep & development charges.
2.b Can you make additional improvements with current technology?
There are a lot of additional improvements that could be done like we can use RFID tags to track the bags & luggage, facial recognition to help people avoid the long-standing queues, in-memory databases to retrieve data very quickly, cloud architecture to store all the data online, real time maps to update the flight positions to avoid delay or cancellation of flights.

3. What are the quantifiable benefits of the new credentialing system?

First, potential threats can be recognized early by identifying anomalies in access behavior. Moreover, the usage of both the video surveillance and an integrated database could provide early warning of any potential threats. Second, the software integrated with all leading PACS, training systems, TSA mandated background check processes and other airport specific IT systems, forced the disparate systems to act like a single unit which in turn made sure that the information was accurate. Finally, reduction in delays of credential processing due to process automation and integration, will result in improved employee productivity as well as increased customer satisfaction due to low support
