On my trip to Lucy T. Davis Elementary school, I had the pleasure of going into Ms. Sandra Philips 3rd grade math class and observe how they worked with technology. Sandra Phillips was a 4-year science and math teacher at Lucy T. Davis Elementary School but had been teaching since 1995. Mrs. Phillips told me how the school had just switched over to something called HP classroom manager. This allowed her to see the students’ progress from her desk. She really liked this because she could still do work from her desk like grading papers or even typing lesson plan well still being able to look and see their progress.…

The Lawrenceville School offers a post graduate (PG) year to recently graduated high school students as a transitional year between high school and college. This year as a boarding member of the Lawrenceville community (similar to that of a university) is an excellent opportunity for students to continue their social and academic development while refining their study and time management skills. Lawrenceville provides a demanding, yet supportive program that offers a variety of academic opportunities extending well beyond those of a typical high school. As a Lawrenceville PG, students prepare for the independence and academic demands associated with a college or university. In addition, there are opportunities to retake standardized tests, such as the SAT or ACT, if improving standardized test scores is a goal for the year.…

Razer Blade Topic This is my personal essay of why I believe should receive a Razer Blade Pro for either my birthday or entering my Freshman year in high school. These reasons are the two laptops available to me now are barely functioning pieces of technology, this is the best laptop available for work and gaming, and it has the best technology for that price, or for really any price. Firstly, I love the idea of school being computerized. The only problem is that the computers that the school is using are terrible.…

For assignment 5.1, I chose to interview Jake Carmany, Business Manager at Norton City Schools. I have to say that I did not realize the amount of tasks and responsibilities this role entails. Jake explained that he is responsibility for all classified staff (i.e. maintenance, custodial, aides, food service, and transportation). However, Jake relies heavily on the supervisors of each area to complete the daily tasks. He gave the analogy of the superintendent and principals; in regards to classified staff members, he (Jake) is the superintendent and the supervisors are like the building principals.…

The Sanctuary of School The essay I chose to write was over the short article of “The Sanctuary of School” by Lynda Barry. In this story it talks about the author Lynda Barry’s experience with the school from a young age. She talks about growing up in a home with her mom and her dad having money issues, relatives that kept moving in, her brother and her sleeping on the couch, and the constant fighting going on. She explains how she didn’t feel safe at home so she talks about school being a safe haven for her, and how lucky she was that she had Mrs. LeSane and Mr. Gunderson.…

Introduction In alignment with the goal of giving all students exposure to and preparation for success in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) careers, kindergarten students were given the opportunity to learn how to code. It was a compelling program for the students, but as with any technology, there were risks to assess and mitigate before allowing the students to use the software and tablets. Volunteers were used to help introduce the students to the software and allow for more one-on-one and small group support than the teacher could provide on her own. However, the volunteers would not be familiar with the software or with how to safeguard the children when using technology during instruction.…

The article titled, “Tapping into the Power of School Climate to Prevent Bullying: One Application of Schoolwide Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports” by Kris Bosworth and Maryann Judkins shows how School-wide Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (SWPBIS) are used in school to stop bullying. Bullying is defined in the article as the “repeated, unwanted aggression perpetrated by someone with greater power against a weaker target.” Bullying is an issue in every school across the world and there is definitely something that needs to be put in place to help combat the bullying in today’s schools. Most programs designed to reduce bullying that are in place today state that bullying is “restricted to individuals.” This can be an…

Student engagement is an important concept in learning. It refers to attention and interest in what is being taught (Strong, Silver, & Robinson, 1995). It increases academic achievement and active learning (Strong, Silver, & Robinson, 1995), Students must be motivated to learn in order to be engaged. Without motivation, students will be disengaged meaning they will lack interest in the class and will not be motivated to complete tasks that are imperative for learning (Strong, Silver, & Robinson, 1995). According to Taylor & Parsons (2011), high school students who are disengaged are more likely to drop out which makes it imperative that students at an early age are kept motivated to learn and interested in what they are learning.…
