Volunteering in the Emergency Department will allow me to see how a team of healthcare professionals comprised of doctors, nurses, technicians, and etc. works. Too often I have heard and read that doctors are ignorant of processing life through intuitive, emotive processes; instead they treat patients completely through a rational analysis—and this strains the doctor-patient relationship. However, in my experiences shadowing two doctors this hasn’t been the case; the doctors I have shadowed were most definitely able to both read and communicate emotion. Since neither of these doctors treated patients with serious health problems, I want to learn whether this doctor-patient relationship is different in a large hospital where patients are often facing far severe conditions. As a future doctor, I definitely want to be able to communicate with my patients in a way that is both comfortable and relatable to them.
