Case Study Before teaching third grade, I student taught in a gifted and talented fourth grade classroom. As we were qualifying one of our students, Ryleigh Moore, we noticed that she had specific characteristics that later proved to be indicative of her classification of gifted and talented. She was qualified into the program at the end of fourth grade. Physically, Ryleigh is comparable in stature to her peers. Her height is four feet, her weight is 79 pounds. The physical characteristic that is significant for Ryleigh, as a potentially gifted and talented student, is her intelligence. After taking an IQ test Ryleigh’s IQ was scored as 146. She also took Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT), and her scores in all areas of ability were in the ninety-ninth percentile. According to Education of the Gifted and Talented “The superior mental and physical characteristics continued into adulthood,” (Rimm, Siegle & Davis, 2018, p.25). Consequently, Ryleigh’s physically gifted characteristics, such as her intelligence, will follow her into adulthood. Emotionally and psychologically, Ryleigh continues to display evidence of giftedness. Emotionally, Ryleigh was usually very happy. However, if Ryleigh became upset, usually over an injustice, her emotions would become extreme. She would cry and become angry for long periods of time. This is …show more content…
She needs the opportunity to receive ample academic rigor and enrichment in correlation with her intelligence (Rimm, Siegle & Davis, 2018, p.79). She also needs support in social and emotional development to allow her to make positive relationships with peers who are different from her (Rimm, Siegle & Davis, 2018, p.79). This can be achieved through a program that teaches coping mechanisms and appropriate social behaviors with the gifted student in mind (Rimm, Siegle & Davis, 2018,
