In Valerie Tarico’s article, “Christianity’s own ‘War on Christmas,’” she states that Christianity takes part in a practice called “syncretism.” Syncretism is when local traditions and religions are absorbed into Christianity. In fact, Tarico claims that Pagan temples became churches, indigenous gods became saints and pagan festival days were turned into Christian holy days. To further this idea of syncretism, Tarico goes on to say that the earliest documentation of Christmas comes from the fourth century; it seems to be related with the union of Christianity and Rome.…

Everyone lies. It is the truth, and it is explained with great depth in Stephanie Ericsson’s essay. She claims, “We lie. We all do. We exaggerate, we minimize, we avoid confrontation, we spare people’s feelings, and we conveniently forget, we keep secrets, we justify lying to the big-guy institutions.”…

In the beginning, Nick establishes his moral uprightness, stating that "I am one of the few honest people that I have ever known. " In addition, Nick proudly states that he graduated from Yale twenty-five years after his father 's graduation and that his "prestigious" family made their fortune in the "wholesale hardware business." In contrast to his declaration of moral uprightness, it is vital to the narrative that the true nature of Nick 's character is revealed. For instance, Nick is constantly surrounded by deceit and infidelity, observing immorality and dishonesty, but chooses to not expose the infidelity.…

Throughout The Great Gatsby, Nick Carraway is the only point of view we are given about the lives between these characters, Fitzgerald uses Nick as a way to establish the motif of loneliness by showing that even though Gatsby has everything one wishes for during this time, he is still deep down alone because he is surrounded by fake love and care; however, Nick himself is also isolating himself the most by not being involved and only being the observer. There are many moments throughout the book where loneliness is portrayed through the characters. Beginning with Gatsby. He is a very mysterious man, who constantly throws huge parties at his mansion, with tons of people he does not know. He is surrounded by many people all the time, yet deep…

Namely, Nick comes from pretty much nothing, and even his family tried to reinvent themselves in order to get ahead in life. When Nick describes his family he says, “The Carraways are something of a clan, and we have a tradition that we’re descended from the Dukes of Buccleuch, but the actual founder of my line was my grandfather’s brother, who came here in fiftyone, sent a substitute to the Civil War, and started the wholesale hardware business that my father carries on today” (3). Clearly, Nick is not proud of where he comes from and wants to change himself. Next, Nick wanted to improve his life by moving out of the midwest and changing his occupation. Nick expresses his motive by saying, “Instead of being the warm center of the world, the Middle west now seemed like the ragged edge of the universe so I decided to go East and learn the bond business” (3).…

To continue, Nick is unreliable as a narrator because he makes rude comments about other people. Nick says, “I’m inclined to reserve all judgments, a habit that has opened up many curious natures to me” (Fitzgerald 1). Nick states that he is a kind person and is a trustworthy friends but he is unreliable because he judges them for their choice. The author wrote, “Nick is constantly making judgements and associations that spring from his own education. Sometimes his judgments, based on his own intellectual viewpoint, seem harsh when he is dealing with an emotional, human situation” (Wolok 1).…

The thick feeling of confusion stirred together with overwhelming anxiety and finally topped off with a sprinkle of fear all contribute to test whether one is able to withstand the spice of life strived in adolescence. To Every Thing There Is a Season, by Alistair MacLeod, is a coming-of-age story “seen through the eyes of an eleven-year-old boy, who as an adult remembers the way things were back home on the farm on the west coast of Cape Breton” during the Christmas of 1977. Being the narrator and attempting to cope and work with Gatsby, Nick Carraway presented himself to be the most admirable character in the novel. Throughout the plot, he shows his ability to cope with various social situations efficiently. For example, upon settling in East Egg in his new home, he receives an invite to a party by an entire stranger. Bravely, he attends the party, despite not having any previous knowledge of the host other than potentially erroneous rumors such as being a murderer. His aforementioned ability is shown through his mingling and his amiability when first meeting the mysterious Gatsby and other attendees of the party.…

Nick is an upstanding young man from a well to do Western family. Despite coming from a wealthy family, Nick was taught the value of reserving judgement at a young age by his father who said “Remember that all the people in this world haven’t had the advantages you’ve had”(1). Nick took this advice to heart and managed to be a fairly accepting person and withheld judgement upon those people who didn 't have the same experiences and opportunities that he had. This treatment towards others allowed Nick to be friends with people as different from each other as Gatsby is from the Buchanans. Throughout the majority of the novel, Nick gives a fair unbiased eye to the people and events that he witnesses, however one of the last phrases he says to Gatsby is “Worth the whole damn bunch put together”(154).…
