Rutherford's Quest For Intellectual Growth

Improved Essays
In his childhood because of the way that his parents were he had the opportunity to have good education and took advantage of it. The effortlessness of a science book he got when he was ten may have been what inspired him and what nourished his longing for to learn more. His best subjects were always math and physics. I believe that the support Ernest got for intellectual growth was from his parents is the thing that contributed the most to his study of the atom, and other later accomplishments. Another part of Rutherford's life that may have influenced his interest for the atom is the way that he worked as a research student under JJ Thomson. His work on the molecule Rutherford preformed an experiment that disproved his tutor, JJ Thomson's plum-pudding model. This experiment had to do with alpha particles and what made them diffuse into different directions sometimes. …show more content…
He also proposed that atoms contain a cloud of electrons that orbit around the nucleus, and that most of the atom is empty space. During his time he was the scientist that knew the most and had most greatly contributed (with experiments) to the atomic theory of that time. Contribution to the modern atomic theory the modern atomic theory states that most of an atom is empty space, an atom consists of a small, dense nucleus surrounded by electrons, atoms contain subatomic particles, and the nucleus contains only protons and neutrons. Rutherford's ideas are present all throughout today's atomic model. The scientist that told us “Most of an atom is empty space” was Rutherford. He was also the one who suggested that electrons move in clouds. Though it being somewhat right, the way electrons move were incorrect and proven by other scientists like Bohr, Schrodinger, and

Ernest Rutherford’s model of the atom suggested the atom had a small, compact nucleus surrounded by a cloud of almost weightless electrons. Bohr proposed adding to the model the new idea of quanta put forth by Max Planck in 1901. That way, electrons existed in set levels of energy, that is, at set distances from the nucleus. His model was a huge leap forward in making theory fit experimental evidence that other physicists had found over time.…

I interviewed my grandfather Charles Rutherford who lives down the road from me. We discussed a few different topics such as what his life was like being a kid, what he thought of school, and how he knew my grandmother was the one for him. It sometimes got off tracks talking about his children and what happened to them, but for most of the time we stayed on topic. We talked a lot about what life was like and his jobs and his life overall. This interview started about his life in Tennessee and it wasn't easy for him back then, he had to walk miles to school and his dad wasn't around very often.…

The letter mentioned of a new field of physics that was showing that the element uranium could undergo nuclear fission, with the resultant release of a remarkable deal of energy. Ever since the Greek man named Democritus stated in the year of 450 B.C. that everything in existence is made of atoms, ever since then scientist have been working to figure out what an atom is exactly. Einstein described the probability that a nuclear reaction could be produced and the possibility of the construction of overpowered nukes that would devastate and demolish…

An atom is a basic unit of an element. For thousands of years, people have been questioning about these tiny particles and have came up with many theories based around it. Though many people believe atomic theories started with John Dalton around the late 1700s or early 1800s. This is not true as the atomic theories started sometime during 300 or 400 B.C. with the philosopher, Democritus, being one of the first to come up with a theory about atoms. Democritus’ theory gave the basics of an atom; but his theory was rejected by many during his time as fellow philosophers, Aristotle and Plato, rejected his theory ("The History of the Atom").…
