Ruth Younger Character Analysis

Ruth Younger is Walter Younger’s wife. She is in her 30s, and is described as an pretty girl, but has disappointment hanging down her face. She shows her love through the way she treats Travis, her son. “She holds him back from her presently and looks at him and runs her fingers over the features of his face. With utter gentleness-Now whose little old angry man are you?” (30). She and Travis had gotten into an argument about giving him the 50 cents he needed for school But before Travis left, she tried to make him feel better. However, Ruth does not always show the positive happy side of her. She is very nagging towards Travis, as she wants the best for him. “I don’t care what the teacher say. I ain’t got it. She is the head of the Younger household, and has all the characteristics one needs to bring up a family. She is caring, and especially when it comes to Ruth. She helps Ruth deal with her stress and pain by massaging her back and calming her down (60). She livens up the down mood there is at the house by being optimistic when she can. She supports Beneatha’s dream of being a doctor, and tells her that she will become one, as it is “God’s willing.” (50). She is protective over her house, and does not allow visitors to come over when they are cleaning. She wants to present themselves at their best moment, not when everything is messy and dirty (56). She is domineering towards the reset of the family members, especially when it comes to religion. She strictly says as long as they live in her house, there will be a God and that there is still a God (51). Lena Younger is proud-not in a bad way, but as a mother. She says: “They spirited all right, my children. Got to admit they got spirit-Bennie and Walter. Like this little old plant that ain’t never had enough sunshine or nothing-and look at
