Jana Evans Braziel contrasts Haitian folklore with stories primarily from Edwidge Danticat’s Krik? Krak!, but also from her earlier stories, Breath, Eyes, Memory and The Farming of Bones. These comparisons are made through the lens of historical figures Défilée and Sor Rose. Braziel thoroughly examines the topic of maternity in each of Danticat’s stories, characterizing maternity-related metaphors in these stories as “maternal refusal.” The particular examples are all unique, but they contribute to the theme that the politics of maternity for Haitian women is difficult for a host of reasons.…
Victoria Woodhull Victoria Claflin, the sixth of ten children, was born in Homer, Ohio on 23rd September, 1838. When Victoria was a child the family was forced to leave Homer after her father, Reuben Claflin, was accused of an insurance fraud. She received very little education and spent most of her childhood with her family's travelling medicine show. At the age of fifteen, she married Canning Woodhull, but got divorced in 1864. After they had divorced, she married Colonel James H. Blood who introduced her to many reform movements.…
Kate Peterson’s lyrical essay To All Those Who Say Write What You Know, is a two page nonfiction memoir of her life in London. The title of Kate’s lyrical essay is significant because she is addressing an audience who demands that one should write of things they have knowledge or firsthand experiences. This is may sound simple and inspiring at first for writers, but attempting to write on what you know can be a challenging request because memories can be distorted. This was evident in Kate’s lyrical essay examining each paragraph. The arrangement of her paragraphs suggests that Petersen is authentic in her narrative voice because she is not restricted in her essay.…
Laura Bohannan is an American anthropologist, who visits an African tribe called the Tiv. She was of the opinion that human nature is similar all over the world. In order to prove her point she took the story of Shakespeare “Hamlet” with her to prove that the points mentioned in it are universal. She told the story to the tribe of Tivs’s on being asked.…
The first stop on that path was Bible College. At the age of 20 she enrolled in Philadelphia College of Bible. During college her mind stayed focused on the “group of brown-skinned people in a jungle.” After she graduated she applied to be a missionary, but was turned down because of her weak back. She was angry about that decision, until she thought that maybe the reason that she was declined was because God was still preparing her people for her.…

A place where I feel the most content is Ruth Lake. I feel the most content at Ruth lake because the sound of the birds chirping, the water splashing, and kids screaming. I love swimming in the cold water, and fishing. I love going tubing and staying with my Grandpa at his cabin. When i go to Ruth Lake the first thing I do every time, is go on my paddle board.…
As main stream denominations continue to shrink and modern day evangelicalism has morphed into something more politically and conservatively centered, I found “Rescuing Jesus; How People of Color, Women and Queer Christians are Reclaiming Evangelism”, by Deborah Jian Lee, enlightening, profound and hopeful as it centers on new, out of the box ways in which people generally pushed into the margins, are redefining their evangelical Christianity. “Evangelicalism is anything but a monolith; it is a vastly diverse landscape”. Meaning, not all evangelicals are the same and perhaps what we think of them or how we envision them is way off the mark.…
7eventh Time Down sings the song, God is on the Move. The words of the refrain, “God is on the move, on the move, Hallelujah. God is on the move, in many mighty ways” accurately reflects my life. God is definitely on the move and has been preparing me for this journey in the MOL program. Thinking about events in my life that contributed to my growth as a leader, several events come to mind.…
When one thinks of a worldview, they often realize that it is “a set of concepts that assembles everything else we believe into a coherent whole.” (Taylor Notes, p. 1)There are many different world views that have become prominent throughout our society. One that is the most prominent is the idea of a Christian Worldview. This proclaims how to think Christianly while leaving within the aspects of the world. (Taylor Notes, p.1)…
In the Eyes of the Mistress In the Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, the new mistress named Mrs. Auld played a significant role in Frederick Douglass' life and education. Mrs. Auld began to teach Douglass how to read - an action that was prohibited. Slave masters did not want their slaves to become literate because they not only wanted to feel superior, but also because they were fearful of the likelihood that an educated African American would recognize their substandard state of living and may rise up and revolt. In the narrative, Douglass' retells the story of when he learned to read through his point of view. Now, one will hear Mrs. Auld's side of the story and how it changed drastically from devotedly teaching Frederick to…
In attempt to develop range in my observation of support groups, I once again found myself returning to an old stomping ground. Throughout my years in high school, I dedicated several hours a week to my local church in a growth group for high school girls. Although I currently experience mixed emotions with religion, I recalled how influential it was during my teenaged years to have such support, convincing me to return to observe a group to identify ways in why it was so helpful for me during difficult moments in my life. Luckily, my previous growth group leader was still leading groups and graciously accepted my request to be a guest that following week. Meeting once a week, the purpose of these groups was to discuss the Bible and life issues, but based on personal experience, these groups offered much more than a few life lectures.…
She has taught me much about how having a relationship with God can have such a major impact upon the outlook of life while going through difficulties. Elyn had an incredibly difficult time surviving the beginning stages of her disease because of all the changes that continually occurred. If only she had been given an introduction to Jesus, our Savior, she would have had a friendship that would never change or ever go away. Isaiah 41:10 says “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”…
My audience consists of the Bible study group that I teach on Thursday nights. They range in age from middle school age to older adults. I am the pastor of this small church in a very rural area of Utah and these are some of the original attendees. They come from a mixture of religious backgrounds, including Catholic, Mormon, Charismatic, and Baptist. Topic: The Christian church pastor has many roles, but his primary roles include equipping the believers to become witnesses to the world and share Christ’s love and forgiveness.…
Introduction into this book and videos covers how we need to set long term goals, but before doing so we need to ask ourselves some questions. Before we can set those goals we should seek to know Christ. This can be done by reading the four gospels and seeing what Jesus did, what we can learn from him, and how does it relate to us? Jesus’ last commandment was to go and make disciples, and while principles never change, our methods have to change in order to reach the current generation, and each beyond. As we get into the chapters we learn that men are God’s method and while they may seem unlearned or ignorant by man’s standards, God uses those willing to learn and raises them into leadership.…
