Ruta Sepetys was born November 19, 1967 in Michigan. She had an American mother and a Lithuanian father. She was brought up in a family of readers, artists, and music lovers. She wrote a lot even as a child and often times her teacher would let her read to the class. When Ruta had attended college, she went to study opera but graduated with a degree in international finance. Before beginning her literary career, she built and ran an entertainment management company in Los Angeles.
