Ruta Sepetys has written a few books, two of which are compelling historical fiction books. She tends to write to both entertain and inform people. Ruta does this through manipulating the stories of Lithuanian citizens during WWII. Her books Between Shades of Gray and Salt to the Sea are both undoubtedly similar yet different stories about the fight against Russians.

When the tannery comes to town, Rukmani is upset about the debilitating inflation caused by the influx of wealthy workers. Stressed about the many traders Rukmani cries that she can “never accept them” (Markandaya 28) and is glad that they have finished construction and are gone because that means things can go back to the way they were. In response to this, Nathan chides, “Foolish woman. There is no going back. Bend like the grass, that you do not break” (Markandaya 28).…

Spectacle: The Astonishing life of Ota Benga was written by Pamela Newkirk, which talks about a quarter of a million New Yorkers who gathered around the Bronx Zoo to observe a young African named Ota Benga who was exhibited in a monkey house cage. Protesters such as William Sheppard, a Presbyterian missionary, Reverend MacArthur, a pastor in Manhattan's Calvary Baptist Church, and Wilford H. Smith all fought to free a 103-pound and 4-foot-11 Ota Benga. While 500 people at a time came to the monkey house and to mock Ota Benga. A way successful way for the Bronx Zoo to honor Ota Benga is to build a memorial for him to show their sincere apology and to join the “Black Lives Matter” movement because after more than a century later, the continuation of incarceration on these young black males for petty crimes and the mass of police shootings on these men has been an alarming issue lately. By doing this they can show empathy towards the black minorities in New York.…

Rukmani believes that her seven children should be able to learn how to read and write and that it is a good skill to have even if one does not use it. Early on in the novel it is revealed that Rukmani was taught how to read and write by her father, and she plans to teach her future children as she was. Nathan, her husband, however does not agree. This is a sign that represents the coming of the modern world. The Revolution of Marina M. is an 816 page book filled with heart-wrenching tales of a girl finding her way through the hardships of life. I usually don’t enjoy books like this one because following a character through a large period of time is not easy to narrate for most authors. These books cannot keep the attention of the reader, or fail to make each part of the protagonists life believable; whether it be from the lack of dimensional characters or not enough descriptions of the settings. However, The Revolution of Marina M. is able to keep the reader focused on Marina’s journey. The novel is very well researched and does not strongly feature a love interest, showcasing a new side of historical fiction that I had not previously read.…
