When Lina and other prisoners were forced to sign a contract that states there criminals and must stay (in the camp) for 25 years, Lina and others refuse. Due to their decision they are constantly being taunted by the NKVD, like when they were buried alive and being promised to visit the town near there camp. The prisoners become in a constant state of fear. The NKVD don't tell there prisoners of what they will do to them. The only way for the prisoners to gain information is by stealing it from somewhere, an example of this is Lina stealing a file about her father from the NKVD. When Jonas as well as the other prisoners become sick due to there lack of sanitation, food, and health, it leaves Lina worried about not only her own future, but the future of her family and friends. Lina now, because of the situation, worries about heavy topics like death and too loose her family. She evens prepares herself for the worst to come. These worries are something that a teen should not be worrying about. Because of Lina's and the prisoners lack of knowledge and worries about their future, they never feel completely calm and save. They lose their innocence because of their fear and worrying about violence and their death, which was something that they never worried about before they were
