As time goes back and forth between the year 1995 and 2012 you see a change in character personality. In the year 1995, the way Rust Cohle presents his character allows the audience to see he has had a rough past. Before learning the possible reason for Cohle’s loneliness, we see him use pills to sleep, see ghosts of a young girl, and stay distant from others. When asked about his family, Rust explains that he was married once, but the marriage shortly ended after the passing of his child. The death of his daughter allows us to understand the ghost he sees, and the reason for him repeating multiple times, “it’s my daughter’s birthday”. In 1995, Rust explains to Marty “I don’t drink, because I’ve had trouble with it before, I didn’t mean too “. When rust says this, it makes you think about possible reasons for him not drinking. Rust’s attire is formal and professional with a clean shaved beard and haircut. His character is distant and anti-social. Many find him odd by the way he distances himself from others and by the things he says. For example, Rust can be described as a deep thinker, “This place is like somebody’s memory of a town, and the memory is fading. It’s like there was never anything here but jungle”. The emotion that Rust expresses on his face, lets others assume he may be depressed on the inside, explaining the reason for him being anti-social. In 2012, his character changes once again, he now looks as if he’s an alcoholic, and does not show an interest in taking care of his
