Emily sobbed quietly in the faint light of her front porch. She kept to herself as she retreated back into the safety of her own bedroom. The dying hours of her night were spent tossing and turning, filled with too much fear to sleep.
Russel couldn’t help but contemplate the events of the previous hours. The silence of the night was pierced only by the sound of the overworked and probably overheated engine. He kept his right foot firmly to the floor as he continued to his destination.
Emily awoke, confused, to the overwhelming sound of her alarm. She forced her herself out of bed and into the shower. The cold water

He had spent many summers here. Russel’s mind filled with the memories of his childhood as he broke down the front door. The memories he cherished so much would become tarnished with his mistakes. The musky scent of the cabin he grew to love was now spliced with the smell of the dried blood on his clothes.
Emily knew what was on that TV and couldn’t help but wonder what Russel was doing. She tried and tried to call him but never got through. If what she saw on TV were true, she knew it was almost too late to help him. Emily realized her only hope to save herself and Russel was to get to him first.
In an hour or so, Russel could hear the sound of a helicopter flying overhead. He knew the cabin was well hidden; he only hoped they wouldn’t be able to find him. In the back of his mind, he knew that he’d only told one person about this place. A knock on the solid wooden door filled the room. He nervously tiptoed across the creaky floor and peered out through a crack. He tentatively nudged the door open . . . a flurry of bullets descended upon

In Merle Temple’s (2018), A Ghostly Shade of Pale, the book tells the story of Temple’s career as an undercover Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics agent during the 1970s at the height of the war on drugs. Although the names and some of the places have been changed to protect the identities of former agents and criminals, this book has a lot of strengths and weaknesses. Some of the most notable strengths are the settings or locations, because it is based in Mississippi, which for Mississippi natives, grabs their attention and allows them to relate more to the book. Another strength lies in Temple’s ability to use very vivid imagery in descriptions of places.…

Wrinkling his nose, he walked into the room and pulling back the curtains, he threw open the window. A blast of warm spring air wafted into the room, the channel of air rhythmically caving and billowing the sheer drapes. He breathed deeply, the scent of hickory and oak intermingled with exhaust fumes preferable to the musty smell inside the room. He couldn’t remember the last time Tom had showered, and it showed. But all that was about to change.…

Human and their psyche have an undeniable need to organize, rationalize, and order the seemingly random and illogical quirks of life. Consequently, this habit and instinct often drives humans to try to analyze themselves in such a way, with rationality. However, this logical method is dysfunctional as humanity and its abstractions such as love, hate, and indifference cannot be sufficiently explained as these abstractions often clash with each other to form the essence of humanity and its unmistakable identity. Martin reveals his struggle in the story when he first discovers his wife’s “condition” of alcoholism.…

The room is like a “tomb furnished as … a bridal” (86) suite. Among the items found in this room is the toiletry set and clothes that Emily bought for Homer some forty years earlier. But the most disturbing thing that the townspeople find, is a man’s body that had “apparently once lain in the attitude of an embrace… [and next to him is a] second pillow [with] the indention of a head… [and] a long strand of iron-gray hair” (86). It is difficult for any person who is of sound mind and body to be able to understand why and how Emily could live all these years, not only alone in that house with a dead body, but sleeping in the same bed with it.…
