Running Record Assessment

During the first running record completed in February it had to be re-done because the book was extremely difficult for the student to read. He was not able to state any words in the book at all. The running record was re-administered with an ‘a to z’ book. During this assessment the student scored 68%, which was still at frustration level, but was high enough to see the skills he needed to progress in. The level of this ‘a to z’ book was level B; it had a total of 47 words. Since the student has shown improvement with reading skills throughout the semester, this level was used for the second running record with a different story line. The reason for text knowledge to be included in next steps for instruction is because the student must know he has to read the text on the page word for word. He can not change the text on the page based on what he sees or what he wants the text to say. This could be administered by explaining who the author and illustrator is at the begging of the story. Additional explanation that the author wrote the story and that is who’s words we are reading. We are not to add in words, or change words because this is not our story. We read other peoples story to learn new things and the have fun. In addition, the student may be able to write and illustrate his own story. Frye words will also be taught to the student because he may be changing the words in the story because he does not recognize the words. Replacing words, he knows for the words he does not know may make him feel better while reading a story. If the student can practice and learn the first 100 Frye words, reading a story or text may become easier. This will also stop him form replacing words because he will recognize the word and be able to say
