Running on Empty
Book club #1

The first chapter of the story “Running on Empty” by Don Aker was truly intriguing. Speaking as a teenage boy myself, these characters displays similar traits like immaturity displayed in extreme driving and bad language. Ethan “... yanked the wheel to the left to avoid a full-on collision with the door. But the front fender clipped the corner of the garage with a whoomp!” Page 3 - Running on Empty by Don Aker. Ethan is driving too fast to stop in time causing him to turn in order to avoid a big collision, making this a high action scene which many teens like to watch. Many forms of slang are viewed as bad language. For example, when Rico said “Pussy…” Page 1. They use this word to call someone scared as did

When Ethan damaged the vehicle, he has to face great consequences. Ethan is saving up to buy a car and all that money is gone as he has to pay for repairs. This consequence creates a conflict with his dad. His father said “I don’t care what you were saving for . It’ll be paying for the repairs” Page 11. His father does not care about what Ethan was saving for. This kind of dislike in his statement is an indication of a conflict in the near future. This is caused by a careless action that Ethan could have prevented in the setting of the story. Before this, Ethan had already known that he would have to hear a lecture. He is “... Preparing for the lecture he knew his father would launch into the second he came down to breakfast. He’d already heard him go out to the driveway to examine the Volvo’s fender and the corner of the garage that had crumpled it” Page 4. Prior to the beginning of the conflict, he knew what he would have to face. He could avoid this setting by being more cautious. Prior to the punishment verdict, the consequence that Ethan is expecting was not at all close to losing everything from his bank account and more. “Ethan’s eyes widened” Page 11. This is when he finds out that his dad’s insurance is not about to pay for this. It is a lot for Ethan to handle and it could possibly contribute to the beginning of the conflict. This setting is very important so far and it has created the greatest conflict in …show more content…

Although Ethan does have physical and emotional troubles, the Engineer knows that Ethan’s main problem is intellectual. This gives the Engineer a more complete idea of Ethan’s story. Even though the Engineer is making up most of the story, the idea that Ethan Frome wants to improve himself intellectually is shown by the fact that he read the Engineer’s popular science literature. He knows that he did not know some of the things in the book and even admitted that science “used to” interest him (6). The Engineer thus found out something about Ethan Frome that Harmon Gow and Mrs. Hale could not, due to his…

When Ethan is sledding down the hill in hopes of slamming into the big elm tree at the bottom, “suddenly his wife’s face, with twisted monstrous lineaments, thrust itself between him and his goal, and he made an instinctive movement to brush it aside” (72). Even after Ethan had rashly decided to end his life with Mattie alongside him, he couldn’t help but think of his wife and perhaps what she would think. This moment of insecurity is very telling because it shows how indecisive Ethan is and how he hadn’t completely accepted leaving Zeena to fend for…

Before Zeena came to care for Ethan’s mother, he felt as though he was constantly isolated and alone, as he had to spend all of his time looking after his mother. However, with the arrival of Zeena, it not only provided another human being to interact with, but also gave Ethan the opportunity to go out into the world and back to work. Upon his mother’s death, fearing the feeling of loneliness, Ethan asked Zeena to stay with him and marry him, although he clearly did not love her. “... when he saw her preparing to go away, he was seized with an unreasoning dread of being left alone on the farm; and before he knew what he was doing he had asked her to stay there with him. He had often thought since that it would not have happened if his mother had died in spring instead of winter….”…

One of the most fascinating aspects of human language is the development of slang: expressions that people take from standard English (or whatever native language) and completely change the meaning of to signify something completely different! These words and phrases are essentially inevitable to encounter when living in a dynamic social society; it’s easy to assume that the vast majority of Americans have heard such words as “cool” when referring to something as interesting, or the phrase “hanging out” used to mean spending time with one another. A few words have come up just over the past five to ten years that sparked my curiosity; my main question being, “What do certain slang words mean to people of different age groups?” While most slang…
