For my personal essay, some difficulties I believe that I may encounter revolve around making my personal experience entertaining and relevant for the reader to continue and enjoy reading. When I read “Running in the Family” by Michael Ondaatje, I felt that it was not interesting whatsoever. I did not want to continue reading it because the question “so what?” keeping on running in the back of my mind, after every story told. For my personal essay, I would like to find a way to make it more relatable and thought provoking. This may come as a challenge to me because it can be difficult to find a personal experience that can contain meaning and relevance to a wide variety of readers. I would like to write about a personal experience that relies

I chose to write journal entries about the book Ellen Foster written by Kaye Gibbons. Each of the journal entries are written by Ellen showing her perspectives over different scenarios throughout the book. The first journal entry she writes is about her dad being an abusive father. She writes about how she is tired of being abused and she ends up finding another place to go. The second journal entry is saying how she was only able to stay at her Aunt's house for a short while until she had to go back to her father's house.…

The first essay that I read was Jonesing for Jamba, by Ashley Vigallon. I felt that this essay was relevant to my own experience in a way. The author explains how she always obeys the law, never does drugs, and does not cause trouble. However, because of her “friends”, she was caught in a bad situation involving the police. Just like the author, I have never done drugs and I am always obedient to the law.…

For my final revision project, I decided to revise my fist essay “The Visible Cancer”. The reason I chose to edit this essay was the special connection that I had to it. When writing this essay, I was very invested in telling the audience how I had felt and describing what had happened with my dad’s cancer as best as I could. In making these revisions I thought it would be a good way to look back on how I viewed the situation when I first wrote this right after it happened compared to how I feel about it now after several months.…

Theopilus London once said, “Mixtapes are very personal, and they describe who you are better than an album sometimes.” Thus, in order to make my essay more personal I have incorporated some key things I hold dear in my life. One of my favorite quotes, “If what I am is what I have and what I have is lost, then who…

When one is separated from those they are supposed to be closest with, they will often look to fill that emotional gap with some form of self expression of comfort. As in Cisneros’ personal essay “Ghosts and Voices: Writing from Obsession”, the distance I lived from my family, both literally and metaphorically, helped to shape myself and my voice. Since both my parents originally hailed from Montreal, the majority of my family remains there to this day. While I am quite close with everyone, there has always been a gap between our existences. Furthermore, being the only openly LGBTQ+ member of my family served to form a greater divide between myself and my inherently Irish Christian loved ones.…

Since the beginning of my first year at school I have been learning to read and write. Throughout these years I have had a lot of experiences with reading and writing. All through high school we would write responses and essays over books we read. Once I entered college everything changed; I began to learn about writers and people who were known because of their great works of literature. In college, you are held to a higher standard and responsibility than you are in high school; this challenge has encouraged me to work hard and because of this I have become better at writing.…

Anti-college essay. I’ve lived on earth for a little less than two decades, but despite my floating through life at a fairly leisurely pace, two monumentals things have, or will, happen. My being born, and the moment I die. These are two monumental moments in any person's’ life, but that is not to say my life isn’t at all interesting outside of those two fundamental aspects of mortality.…

There were many ideas for stories that popped into my head, which I felt needed to be addressed. Personal experiences became utmost important for me to share to help bring awareness to a cause and also allow people to have a voice. I wanted to tell a story not to make people sad, but to show how one moment can change a family’s life forever. I want to show how one day you can be living an ordinary life, and the next day that same life is turned upside down in an instant. I also wanted to tell this story to bring awareness to a disease that most people do not know can affect young children.…

A Reflection: The Danger of a Single Story As most people, my story consists of an abundance of struggle, trial and error, and also lessons. These challenges, in addition to the lessons, have brought upon stress, anxiety, and even depression into my life. They have made me question myself to the point of insanity, avoid meeting and accepting new people into my life, and even fail to uphold the bonds I had previously made with both relatives and peers. However, I cannot be defined and bound to the “single story” of my anxiety. There are many more complex stories that represent me even more adequately than the ones that correspond to the struggles I’ve faced; as there are many more stories significant to other various people, places and things…

When I think about self-identity I like to think about the experiences that have shaped me into the person I have become. One could describe their character using the same traits found on elementary school motivation posters, but a person’s self-worth runs much deeper than that. This universally applies to everyone, because we all have to undergo our fair share of emotional and physical turmoil. A few examples of such circumstances are living conditions, traumatic events, phobias, and even mental or physical ailments. All of which can range from positive encounters to completely life altering events.…

In my previous essay I wrote this: “All that matters is that one day, after I have finally gotten rid of the mask, I will finally figure out who I am”. Showing that the struggle with the mask has clouded me for so long that it left with an identity crisis. Though the last essay was the one that concentrated on using writing to help yourself, I do wish to continue using that same method and I also wish to mix it with the one for this essay. This essay concentrates on writing about the different voices/parts of yourself that you may have and finding a creative way to use them. Leading to what I am trying to say, which is that I wish to use this essay to examine the voices that I use most in my everyday life (the ones that really represent who…

Lost In Meaning As I sit down to write this personal narrative essay, I recalled upon all my childhood memories that I could remember. Out of these memories, I found some difficulties in picking out a moment in my life that left me with some “warm” feeling in the heart.
