At first it may seem that there are not many differences between seeing life as a run and a race, but after some thought, there are actually quite a few. There are the different results they produce, the different feelings they produce and maybe most importantly, the different purpose of each.
There are the obvious differences. In a race there are winners and losers and in a run there is not. Before coming to Borstal, Smith was obviously an experienced runner, but he never mentions races he was in. In the second paragraph, Smith mentions, “ They give us a bit of blue ribbon and a cup for a prize after we've shagged ourselves out running or jumping, like race horses, only we don't get so well looked-after as race horses, that's the only thing,”

I still wonder when I fully will understand the mental aspect of racing. I continued into track season, doing distance. It was then I realized that I could run fast. If I made a goal, I would eventually be able to achieve it and I could use it to push me to get faster. In “Born to Run” by Christopher McDougall, McDougall makes the argument that humans were “born to run.” In Chapter 28 specifically, he gives us a story of David Carrier and Dr. Bramble, who search for evidence to figure out if human bodies were made to run. Throughout this chapter, we get a detailed story of how questions were asked, tests were done, and answers were found, all to prove his claim that humans were “Born to Run.” McDougall is able to persuasively argue his point through using detailed descriptions of what was done to reach this theory, clearly ordering the events that took place, and using entertaining language. These things are what make “Born to Run” fun to read while still gaining information.…

While the 541,000 marathon finishers within the US all come from different backgrounds and have distinct differences, they are frighteningly similar in many aspects of their lives. Take for instance the level of training and determination each marathon runner has. Six out of the seven days every week for at least a couple months, they spend their days in the gym and out on the trails. One must build a body of muscle in order to complete the lengthy race – as is demonstrated by the father-son duo of Ken and Will Satre. Don’t let Ken Satre’s age or small stature fool you; he is a machine.…

“It was a such pretty day that day, it was a really picture perfect sky, blue skies, the marathon feeling is that everybody is really upbeat and excited,” said Melinda Arredondo, when describing the 117th Boston Marathon on April 15th of 2013. Carlos and Melinda Arredondo stood at the finish line of the marathon with 400 small American flags to hand out to finished runners in honor of their two sons, Alex and Brian, who had passed away. Alex Arredondo was killed in a sniper attack in Iraq at 20 years old while serving for the United States in 2004 and just a few years later, Brian Arredondo, committed suicide from his struggle with grief. To Carlos and Melinda not only did these flags represented their national pride, but also the love and strength of their family, which they wanted to see spread all over the finish line of the Boston Marathon. But, just as Carlos stood fidgeting with his last flag, contemplating how to best honor his country and sons with this flag, he heard a thunderous boom, and the beaming spirits of Boston were instantaneously camouflaged with smoke.…

Race the movie is directed and produced by Stephen Hopkins who was a passenger on the Mayflower in 1620, one of fortyone signatories of the Mayflower Compact, and an assistant to the governor of Plymouth Colony through 1636. The three top star of the movie is Jesse Owens played by Stephan James, Larry Snyder played by Jason Sudeikis, and Dave Albritton played by Eli Goree. This movie was released on February 2016. I watched the movie in the Boca Movie Theater called Cinemark Palace 20, I thought the movie was very inspirational. In the movie Stephan James plays the legendary runner from the ages of 20 to 23, the years that turned him from virtually unknown high school track star in Cleveland, Ohio to the man who defied Adolph Hitler's racial superiority at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, Germany.…

The enclosed annotated bibliography represents recent research on the topic of safety in auto racing. I began my research by asking ‘Is NASCAR taking proactive measures to keep its drivers, crew members and fans safe while maintaining its entertainment value?’ In my paper, I will argue yes, NASCAR takes safety seriously while still maintaining fair and entertaining competition. Although throughout its history safety was overlooked, the current state of operation is dedicated to research and develop innovations that limit injury and fatality. Many changes occurred as result of increased driver deaths, most significantly, Dale Earnhardt Sr.…

As a primary source, slave narratives have become an invaluable in the way they portray the plight of fugitive slaves and the phenomenon of running away. Like many who recorded their own slave narratives, the author of Running a Thousand Miles For Freedom, William Craft, intended to accurately portray his own fugitive slaves experience in a way that emphasized the atrocities of slavery in an attempt to convince the public to abolish slavery. The slave narrative was published by William Tweedie in London during the year 1860. London was a common place for African Americans to go to be published because of the less racist climate which made publishers more accepting of African American literature. The significance of Running a Thousand Miles…
