Josef Heppburger was a German football player who is most well known for being the manager of the 1954 FIFA winner West German national football team. But perhaps what followed him more than his legendary playing and coaching career was his ability, when asked, to epitomize the intrinsic nature of the sport of soccer in just a few short words such as vor dem spiel ist nach dem spiel, which when translated into modern English means, “the end of the game is before the game.” This quote became popular not only because of its ability to roll off of the tongue in native German, but also because of its unintentional nod at the idea of destiny and fate and whether or not they are truly escapable. German filmmaker Tom Tywker had a different perspective on the ineludibility of our reality and fate. It is derived from the French verb différer, which has two meanings, both “to defer” and “to differ”, where a difference in choice or motive results in a deference of meaning, and alternately, where a deference of choice ends in a different meaning. Throughout the movie Run, Lola, Run we see differánce a number of times. The movie begins with the following quote, also attributed to football player Josef Heppburger: Der ball ist rund. Das spiel dauert 90 minuten. Alles andere ist reine theorie, which means, “The ball is round. The game lasts ninety minutes. That’s a fact. Everything else is pure theory.” The same is true of Lola. The phone rings. Manni needs the money. That is all we know; everything else is left to pure chance, fate at the hands of differánce. This is demonstrated through three 20-minute cycles as Lola runs with all that she
