As seen here, the basic movement pattern of this shot consists of run, jump and spike, and the subroutines of preparation, take-off, flight, contact and follow through . For preparation, it is essential to establish direction and acceleration, the athlete must evaluate the placement of a set and accordingly accelerate with low, powerful steps, usually two to three, with arms forward. For an effective take-off both feet must be firmly planted, allowing the muscles to contract and as the player launches both feet should leave the ground simultaneously and their arms should swing through giving momentum. The success of the flight is dependent on the direction of the hips, ideally, hips should be facing approximately 30 degrees away from the net as the large muscles in the trunk used to rotate the hips is equally useful in generating force for contact, which is achieved by whipping the arm through at high velocity, ensuring contact is made with the top of the ball allowing it to be slammed down into the oppositions court. It is also vital to follow your arm through with the shot, land with knees bent and feet shoulder width apart (Hede, et al, pg. 88). …show more content…
Through the footage of my spike it is evident I am in the associative stage of learning as the fundamental mechanics of the shot are understood, however the take-off needs refining regarding the two feet
