Ruined: A Short Story

Improved Essays
I had previously attempted reading Ruined in sixth grade, I found it confusing and boring. This time the book did a great job of catching my attention and keeping it . I think it was because I found it more relatable this time, one page in the book that really showed this was page 40 and 41 where it says " 'It is Rebecca, isn't it ?' Marianne asked her in an imperious tone, and Rebecca nodded. 'You're new here, aren't you?' Rebecca nodded again. She couldn't bring herself to speak - not because she was intimidated by Marianne and Helena, but because she didn't want to act like she was yet another one of their humble servants." . I've dealt with bullies and rude people before so I could really relate to Rebecca.

I have chosen to explore the theme ‘ conflict between cultures and how it does or doesn’t get resolved’. This theme is evident in the short stories, Awful Australia By Anna Walwicz, Only Ten by Allan Baillie, Ambushed by Tim O’Brien and the short film Coffee and Allah by Sima Urale. In the short story “Awful Australia” by Anna Walwicz, the young person is ‘hating’ on Australia. She doesn’t like anything about Australia.…

Inside a body far, far , away tHere was a white blood cell named disgrace. Disgrace was always teased and bullied by his peers for being, well, being a disgrace . Disgraces’ mother, who was intoxicated with alcohol at the time of giving birth to him (alcohol consumption during pregnancy is rarely a good idea), had given her newly born son a surprisingly faultless name. Disgraces’ only real friend was obviously someone in the same boat , another ill-named white blood cell named, “ugly poo,” this cell never made fun of Disgraces’ name because his stupid name was just as bad.…

Hey. I am sorry I haven't finished the first chapter yet, stuff keeps coming up, but it is really good. It is very suspenseful and moves at a very fast pace. The one suggestion I would make, when transitioning from one scene to another, maybe slow down and explain things in a bit more detail. Like when Archen falls in to the Angry Valley, is she on a thunderbird?…
