First, if my team truly had reached a level of cohesion to give me peace of mind in everyone’s efforts to achieve such a level, it would be evident to my staff and any bystanders that the team exhibited team spirit, which is a “genuine consideration for others” where each athlete displays an “eagerness to sacrifice personal interests of glory for the welfare of all” (Wooden & Carty, 2005). Vividly displayed in the movie Rudy, the team captain (formal leader) took the initiative to not dress out for his final game in order to allow Rudy (informal leader) to dress out for his final game of his senior year. Rudy led from an informal role where he took physical and mental abuse (in the form of initiative and intentness) to make the team starters better players. Initially, they resented Rudy since his industriousness (i.e., hard work) exceeded the starters; thereby, exposing them as possible posers. Rudy indirectly turned the team around and the result was an increased level of cohesion as evidenced by the team spirit exhibited by all of the players. …show more content…
Research reports that emergent leaders are the ones who direct colleagues and make decisions for the team when no one else will and this is consistent with research on emotional intelligence.
