Rudderless Movie Analysis Shonless

The movie Rudderless, directed by William H. Macy, reveals the life of a grieving father who slowly spirals downward into depression because of the loss of his teenage son. Sam, the main character, loses his son, Josh, to a shooting at the college he attended. When the drastic news hit television, many families were affected, especially Josh’s. Sam turned to drinking, quit his job, and moved out of his house and into a sailboat. Two years later, Sam received a box full of his son’s belongings from his divorced wife. The box contained several of Josh’s recorded tapes, lyrics, and his guitar. Each of these tapes had a song Josh had wrote before his death. Sam listened and started learning each of these songs, for they gave him a way of holding onto and remembering his son.
Once Sam learned the lyrics, he went to a local bar and signed up to preform one of the songs. Evidently, no one in the bar knew the song was written by his dead son because then it would not have been considered the hit of the night. After the show, a musician in the audience, Quentin, is captivated by the song and asks Sam to start a duo. Reluctantly, Sam agrees to form a rock band together and they perform his son’s songs. Should forgiveness be given under all circumstances? Sam demonstrates a great deal of suffering when he is forced to either forgive his son because of the love they shared or keep Josh’s actions as a testament for not forgiving. The parents whose sons and daughters were killed in the shooting are tested to put their grief aside and decide if they can forgive. When the corruptions effect a certain person, it can be hard to see through the sorrow felt and hastily decide against forgiveness.
