Ruby Nell Bridges was born on September 8, 1954 in Tylertown, Mississippi. Her parents, Lucille and Abon Bridges, were sharecroppers, they farmed the land but did not own it. Soon, machines started taking over their jobs . This led to Ruby’s family moving to New Orleans when Ruby was 4 years old . Her dad got a job as a janitor and her mom got a job scrubbing floors at a bank after the kids went to bed . Ruby became an older sister to 2 brothers and 1 sister. Their names are Malcolm, Joana, and Michael Bridges. When Ruby was in kindergarten, she and a few other children were ordered to take a test that would determine whether African American children could attend white public schools. On November 14, 1960, she was escorted by her mother and four U.S marshals to protect her from the violence of the crowd. She thought that the protest was Mardi Gras due to all of the signs and screaming. Ruby and her mother sat in the principal's office on the first day of school while parents took their children out one by one.
