Ruby Ann: A Short Story

Improved Essays
A trapeze artist, a tiny young woman in a dress so short that Ruby Ann could see where her legs turned into hips, danced along a taut wire tied between two poles. Beside her, a man covered in tattoos played some kind of flute, egging on the little woman.
Roaming through the crowds were women dressed in little more than bras and panties with sheer skirts that twirled around them and seemed to change color as they juggled flaming orbs and danced provocatively. Men threw swords to each other and some dueled, even drawing blood.
Ruby Ann stuck close to Jane, but Jane seemed unconcerned. In fact, it seemed like she was searching the circus for something or someone.
Frowning, Ruby Ann asked, “Are you supposed to meet up with someone?”
Startled, Jane

This technique of communication tends to be the most effective due to how engaged the audience becomes when the facts are retold as a storyline. Lloyd uses this to her advantage as she narrates key points of her experience as a woman who had been sexually exploited. Examples range from her troubling childhood abuse, to being raped by her first pimp, to escaping the life as a prostitute. Yet the most meaningful memory Lloyd shares through narrative dialogue, tells of how she first started GEMS, an organization meant to help girls and young women who had been in that situation.…
