1999 saw the release of ‘The Hurricane’ moving story of Rubin Carter and his wrongful imprisonment. Directed by Norman Jewison tells us the true story of Rubin Carter’s encounter with the Justice System where he is wrongfully convicted of a murder and given multiple life sentences. The story turns when Lesra and his Canadian tutors support Rubin and gives him the motivation he needs to fight his case. The director’s insightful use of camera work, costume, tracking, and dialogue has a big effect on the audience's understanding and emotions towards the film.

The parcel, which was delivered to his cell from Lesra, revealed to us a boxing robe, which Rubin puts on. He then proceeds to ‘air box’ towards the camera, where the camera films him through the prison bars of his cell. The significance of the boxing robe is that Rubin is fighting again and now has hope. To the audience, this gives them the feeling of excitement, hope, and expectation, as now that Rubin is fighting again the story can continue to where he is released. Tracking is used in the first part of the scene where Lt. Jimmy Williams, holding the parcel moves up and along towards Rubin’s cell. Tracking combined with tilt shots shows that the parcel is important. This gives the audience an effect of curiosity and we soon see that in fact the parcel is very important as Rubin opens it to reveal a boxing robe, which is a symbol that Rubin is fighting again. In the audience’s world sometimes people need some external motivation to get them going again. An example of this would be if a student gave up on their assignment, you could tell them the rewards of completing it. Rewards of completing an assignment could be getting good results at school and being able to enter tertiary education, which could promise you a job and possibly a well-paid one
