Signs and Symptoms German measles is a viral infection most distinguished by a red rash that appears all over the body. Commonly known in the United States as rubella, it is one form of the measles virus. Generally a mild febrile viral disease it is identified by its maculopapular rash. Rubella can be difficult to diagnose due to symptoms similar to that of dengue, scarlet fever, measles, parvovirus, and the herpes 6 virus amongst others. Children often times do not present symptoms, which is very dangerous and a community health concern. Adults however will present with a mild grade temperature, headache, conjunctivitis, malaise or coryza.

The more serious the infection is; is the more easily detectable it is at birth. However, mild CRS can remain undetected with slight cardiac involvement or hearing impairment even insulin dependent diabetes has been linked to CRS as a late manifestation. Leading many to question the actual prevalence of the disease within the community. It’s hard to determine, standard lab testing is needed and can still be difficult even with the right equipment. Confirmation is based on class M rubella-specific immunoglobulin (IgM ELISA) and must be obtained within twenty-eight days post rash. Incubation is generally anywhere from fourteen to seventeen days and can range over
