As a High School Physics student in my Junior year, I was placed on a team and asked to build a Rube Goldberg machine. I had seen several YouTube videos on these ball rolling, random ramps, fast moving machines…but were we able to build our own construction marvel for extra credit? Rube Goldberg began his career as an engineer and later to become a American Pulitzer Prize winning cartoonist. His vision of taking everyday household items and making them into crazy inventions that helped solve simple problems like ringing a bell, opening a door or moving an object, inspired me that I could create a Rube Goldberg machine.
The first attempt involved a trip to Home Depot composed an elaborate action plan with gears, metal connectors and of course the inspiration of using every power tool we could find. As I soon learned practice, and more practice makes this ball roll off the table and I spent my time chasing …show more content…
I created new opportunities for my teammates by distributing and sharing leadership. I listened to all ideas or suggestions from each member of this team, that everyone had a voice and was heard. I assigned sections of the invention to each person so each had ownership in success the design.
As a team, we all need to agree or disagree with the group’s decision and live with the design and the direction that we take. I worked with my team to inspire them to keep our design simple and take mini steps to achieve our goal. For example, I also took the challenge of building the most complex part of the machine; this made my team feel that I would ask them to anything that I wouldn’t do myself.
I learned that good relationships among team members help support the productivity of the team project. We created the best Rube Goldberg Machine we could make as a team, and became friends along the
