These changes would remind her how life in India was before her migration. Rubaiha had said, “Back home, the whole society would be a big giant family. People would also be no different.” She meant that the people, towns and stores would be so close. The number of people would be big, families would live nearby, and stores would be in walking distance. “The lifestyles here are different from India,” she said, and they were. Foods clothing created a dramatic change in her life. Since there are mostly fast foods like hamburgers and stuff in America, she was not used to it. In India, foods are freshly cooked and are mostly made with rice. Clothes also were a major difference in her lifestyle. The clothing here would be plain and more open, like short t-shirts and ripped jeans. While in Indian dresses were fancy but closed, and extra jewelry would be put on with makeup. This created it hard for Rubaiha to fit in. But the worst was yet to come. Harsh winters had come and created a lot of work for the unexperienced Rubaiha. Not only was it hard to live in the cold but also the work that came with it. Normally in India wouldn’t get this cold because it never snowed, as a result she never had to shovel. She quickly learned how to adapt to the climate, and in a few weeks she learned how to shovel. Because, Indians are quicker at learning than most Americans. Rubaiha was glad that she came to
