C. What coursework or experiences best prepared you to perform during internship?

I think the course that I utilized the most in my internship was Program Design and Administration (456). I caught myself doing certain things that I shouldn’t be doing. For example, using opinions in my documentation. For instance, saying something is “appropriate” is an opinion because what is appropriate for one person might be inappropriate for another person. I think Facilitation Techniques course came in handy during my internship because in a nursing home setting it can be easy to get stuck in a routine and

It was also helpful when applying to internships because you can use examples from your volunteer experience during your interview. For example, I was able to say in my interview that I can think on the spot because during my time at Riverfront the staff occasionally wouldn’t show up for programs so I would have to think of an art and craft as soon as I arrived. Next, the volunteer experience has made me a more well-rounded person and has helped me understand what population I enjoy working with. Everyone has a niche and through volunteering, you can learn what population you most connect with. Third, I have become more comfortable and open working with people with disabilities. I was always intimidated at first because I didn’t want to offend or not understand the population I am working with. However, I learned to get to know people on a one on one basis and the relationship always grows from

I am a naturally more quiet and shy person, which did prove to be a weakness for me when it came to working and volunteering, because everything was done in teams. However, with time I was more able to express my thoughts and opinions while feeling comfortable with the people around me. I saw myself shift from always being the listener, to taking on leadership roles, which was noticed by my employers, and they offered to promote me to shift supervisor. Working with Tim Hortons and all the opportunities that came along with working for them, has helped me make a lot of new connections, I am very close with my regular customers, co-workers, and employers. I am particularly very close with my co-workers, inside and outside of work, we get along really well, and I consider them one of my closest group of friends.…

A veteran to me is a patriotic, unselfish, brave, and courageous person, who would sacrifice time from their families to serve and protect our nation. As Jeff Miller once said, “The willingness of America’s Veterans to sacrifice for our country has earned them our lasting gratitude.” Veterans from every country have served throughout many wars. They have put their blood, sweat, and effort into doing the right and beneficial thing for their nation. Being a veteran means not only to serve in the military, but it means to have the selflessness and courage to go off to war to ensure the freedom of the nation.…

Service to others has played a big part of my high school career. I am an instructor for a middle school indoor winterline group and I am specifically in charge of the colorguard members and their work. When I am with the group, I help instruct and show these young students the correct way to do dance, colorguard, and performance. By teaching them, it has lead me to develop my own skills, like communication, leadership, and my own dance and colorguard skills. Also, another reason service is important in my life is because of the relationships I gain.…

    Volunteering At Veterans

Volunteering at Veterans Affairs Medical Center was one of the greatest experience I've ever had. Sitting down with the elderly and getting to know them, I noticed if more teens could actually sit down and take the time to talk to an elderly person they could gain an opulent amount of knowledge. Sitting down and getting to talk an innumerable amount of veterans as I could, I was intrigued by how each person had a story of their own going through WWII. Voluntarily, I was able to contribute to the organization by having open conversations with the veterans, providing beverages, and having a great time. It wasn't till the end of the program when my perception began to change about the organization I volunteered for, it's more than just about kids…

Many of the organizations that I am involved in, including FFA, 4-H, and LYO, take part in several service projects throughout the year. As a result, I have been involved in multiple community service activities over the course of my high school career, such as taking a week-long mission trip to Nashville, Tennessee this past summer, or just spending an evening during the holiday season Christmas caroling around town. Although some people aren't always willing to give up their time to help others, I believe that an essential aspect of being a member of a community is being willing and able to devote your time to helping others. It helps you develop positive relationships, and it lets the people you're helping know that there are places they can turn to for support. It helps you build up your responsibility, reliability, and work ethic, and it provides community members with a chance to establish lasting connections with one another.…

When an employer or college is looking at an applicant’s resume, volunteering experience is a beneficial item to add, especially if it is a related field. Some people are just love to help out the community by volunteering. Many different volunteer programs are appealing to different people, like helping take care of puppies at the animal shelter for animal lovers, caring for a child at a children’s hospital if they are affectionate towards children, or serving a meal at a food kitchen for a chef or someone who is inspired to help the needy. I am called to a different group to volunteer with: the elderly. Each organization helps the elderly in different ways, but my favorite cause is that of Meals on Wheels.…

This applies in the field of medicine where changes are occurring day after day. It was a balmy ten o’clock on a Saturday morning in June; the thick air around the Humane Society smelled vaguely of livestock. Stepping into the air-conditioned chill of the shelter, I took a breath, signed in to the volunteer portal, and took my place at the front desk. On this particular day the first people waiting were an older couple, and my heart sank when I saw them. The husband had a bundle in his arms, something wrapped in an old comforter, and I had worked the front desk long enough to know what that meant. Sure enough, as they approached, the blanket shifted and I saw, as I knew I would, the white muzzle and emaciated face of a dog in the decrepit last stages of old age.…

I believe that volunteering expands horizons and allows individuals to experience different environments and situations. It shows who you are as a person and reflects the positive character traits you have. Relay for life is a life-changing event that allows everyone in communities across the globe to come together to honor cancer survivors, remember loved ones, and help fight back. Relay for life has allowed me to encounter many people who all share a common purpose — to support the American Cancer Society's mission. This event made me realize that everyone can make a difference and that every person counts.…

Both experiences have affected me because it has changed the way I see the world around me and given me new insight on what is going on in my own community. I thought I had a pretty good knowledge of the issues occurring around me, but after going to these events and listening to the class lecture, I have found there is a lot for me to learn from to have a greater understanding of what is going on around me. Because of this Service-L Learning course, I learned I need to be open-minded about the impact individuals, such as myself, have on the community, so I can better help the individuals in my community. This experience was different than what I expected because I expected to be volunteering at one certain area for the whole 20 hours. I did not expect to take part of what the community events, but I am glad I did because it has opened…

This can give you a variety of aspects to observe and engage in while being of service to a specific cause. Many people that volunteer are part of the diverse culture you may be interested in and are willing to explain and give you more insight to cultural issues they are facing. Volunteering can also open doors to a culture that may be more discrete about their practices. This event has also made me very aware that just because a culture looks similar, have similar customs and geographical location; that they have the same beliefs.…

Throughout the course, I learned different aspects of project management, and skills that can be used in the everyday life as long as involve interacting with other people. In this class I learned about how to be a better team member. This semester I was reminded of how important communication is and how people need to keep emphasizing it as one of the most important skills any person could possesses. The personality test was useful, I think it gave all of us a good way to start to see how everyone is different. It made it easier for each of us to better understand one another in how our unique personalities can be a challenge when working with others.…
