“Why take the hard path?”, someone would ask. My answer has always been, “I don’t know. That’s just who I am”. I have always been told that I was an anomaly. I was that kid who volunteered at a nature reserve for my pure pleasure. I was that kid who came to a small liberal arts college in the middle-of-nowhere in Iowa to follow my dream. I was that kid who created a new major to further explore my enthusiasm for social justice. I was that kid who had to convince the college to approve a new study-abroad program to broaden my knowledge of human rights and non-governmental organizations. Yet, I am no anomaly. There are thousands of students who share the same passion as I have: love for social justice and desperation to make the world a better place. As a person who want to be a pioneer and a mentor for those who work for the underrepresented communities, leadership is a quality I value greatly. Good leadership is a quality that can only be achieved when you are aware of both yourself and your environment. By reflecting on your surroundings, you can understand their issues with their set of eyes, and discover the base causes of the problems. Knowing yourself leads to acknowledging your strengths and weaknesses, enabling yourself to realize what works are necessary to obtain the power and ability to achieve your objectives. Leadership, therefore, allows you to make more constructive changes. Furthermore, leadership follows with communal bonds and team-work. By inspiring others to work with you, you bring bigger awareness to this world. RRASC programs motivate one to master in working both independently and dependently. They also present you with challenges that require critical thinking, flexibility, and open-mindedness. All these great qualities I can gain from RRASC program contribute to shaping myself as a better
