Obesity is a disease that creates mental, physical, spiritual, and emotional challenges for the individuals affected (Dreber, Reynisdottir, Angelin, & Hemmingsson, 2015). In an interview with a previously obese individual, RP discussed her medical history which included an array of co-morbid conditions. RP under when gastric bypass surgery two years prior to our interview, has since lost 100 pounds and is now in excellent health (RP, personal communication, April 23, 2016). In the interview with RP, a 59-year-old female, we discovered that RP has a history of diabetes, congestive heart failure, hypothyroidism, sleep apnea, and obesity (RP). RP no longer requires insulin for her diabetes and has been taken off of all of her medications except for her thyroid medication (RP). While RP has improved her physical health since her surgery and weight loss, she must now learn to maintain a healthy lifestyle. This nurse would look at one diagnosis at a time and develop one care plan per diagnosis. On the other hand, a nurse using the holistic care process may use a concept map to look at RP as a whole (Dossey, & Keegan, 2013). The concept map will help the nurse to determine a how RP’s mental, physical, spiritual, and emotional health in combination can be treated (Dossey, & Keegan, 2013). Dossey, and Keegan (2013) stated, “Concept maps permit the nurse to view the situation as a whole and initiate care based on the contextual nature of the client’s world” (p. 158). When caring for RP it would be easy to simply take her complaints of depression and simply treat the one diagnosis, but with a holistic approach we can gather all of the facts before creating a treatment
