This story starts in 1906 in the Adirondack Mountains in Northern New York. The main characters are Mattie Gokey, Weaver Smith, Royal Loomis, Michael Gokey, etc. Mattie is a highly intelligent sixteen year old girl, who loves the idea of selling books around the world. Weaver Smith who is also highly intelligent and is in love with math is Mattie's best friend. He’s also the only African-American boy in the whole town. Royal Loomis is a handsome and dull boy who many girls swoon over, including Mattie. But there is only one girl Royal is hoping to marry. Michael Gokey, is Mattie's father. He is a hard working and single father (ever since his wife died due to cancer) for his four, used to be five kids. Four kids because his oldest son …show more content…
Soon after, Lawton the eldest of the family disappeared after having a fight with his father. Since Mattie is the second oldest she has to be the “mother” of the house by cooking, cleaning, do lots of chores, take care of her Father and her three little sisters, Abby, Lou and Beth, while she tries to keep up with her education. Due to lack of money Mattie has to work at The Glenmore hotel. One day Mattie was working as usual but, then approached by Grace Brown. Mattie decides not to burn the letters and actually read them. To find that Chester Gillette, who is Grace's lover is the one who killed her because she was pregnant with his baby. While Grace's death was a tragic and a big deal Mattie had her own life that she had to worry about. Mattie was accepted to Barnard College in New York City with a full scholarship. Mattie was ecstatic but, when she adds up the price she doesn't have enough money and she can't just leave her father and her three sisters. Mattie also has a romance she can't leave behind. Royal Loomis was the boy that every girl in the town dreams over. But Royal had his eye set on one girl and that girl is Mattie. He has also promised to marry her. Mattie has no idea what she should do.

Mattie's best friends Weaver lost all of his money for college so he decided to just quit school. Mattie was quite upset because she that he would have been a great lawyer. She would've done the same thing if she was going to marry Royal. Sadly, she realized that Royal was only wanting to marry her for her father's land. Mattie realized she couldn't help Grace because she was already dead. So, Mattie decides to resolve her life to the fullest potential because she can do so unlike Grace.
