“The Song of Norway, RCL’s first ship, started servicing voyagers in 1970” (Marketline Company Profile, 2016). The Song of Norway was the first passenger ship built “specifically for warm weather cruising rather than point-to-point transport” (Marketline, 2016). This began sailing for pleasure instead of sailing for necessity. The Nordic Prince and Sun Viking started transporting passengers in 1971 and 1972, soon after Song of Norway was introduced. After designing a newer brand of cruise ships which lent themselves to a more serene, vacation-like experience, which also had the ability to hold up to 1,413 passengers per ship, RCL began to incorporate fitness programs and classes into the schedule of at-sea activities in 1984. RCL became a public company in 1993 and also began to take part in the New York Stock Exchange (Marketline, 2016). RCL went through a merger with Celebrity Cruise Lines in 1997 for $1.3 billion in “cash, stock, and assume a debt to strengthen the cruise business in North America and to expand into Europe” (Bibby, 1997). Royal Celebrity Tours was debuted in 2001, and gave passengers the option of automated booking for cruises in 2002. Shipping Out and Into the Heart of Darkness I was relieved when I found out in Tom Scocca’s interview with David Foster Wallace that Harper’s magazine had the writer cut in half what was a 110-page article.
