Roy T. Bennett: A Comprehensive Learning Experience

Improved Essays
As Roy T Bennett said, “some things cannot be taught: they must be experienced. You never learn the most valuable lessons in life until you go through your own journey.” Life is about learning and experiencing good and bad situations. You can’t live life without having the knowledge of knowing what you have learned. I can tell of three times I’ve had profound learning experiences. One profound experience happened in fifth grade. Thursday or Friday afternoon, it was science class. The other students and I are taking a test; I noticed the kid sitting next to me was looking over my shoulder and taking my answers. I quietly leaned over and whispered for him to stop, and I covered my answers. He didn’t like that, so in retaliation he knocked my papers on the ground and yelled to the teacher that I was taking his answers. I got a big fat zero on my paper and note sent home. I learned then that I’ll never sit next to anyone during a test, never had any problems after that. Another learning experience happened in my senior year of high school. As you go through school you make friends …show more content…
I started mid-October working for the VA hospital coffee shop or Starbucks. Since I started working there I’ve met and seen doctors and veterans that know me just by voice. I thought I was struggling to pay bills and not being financially able to buy things that I want. Homeless vets or veterans that are stuck at the hospital due to health issues have things so much worse. Not only because they are injured but because they can’t all afford health care or afford a room in the hospital for round the clock care. I can smell coffee and perfume of widows getting a drink and leaving the hospital in tears because of their husbands passing. My days may be bad but they don’t fall apart around me like some peoples do. I’ve learned to make people laugh and to see the joy in life and that life is bad but it can get

Since the beginning of the vietnam war, the number of homeless veterans expanded dramatically. Thirteen percent of homeless men in the United States are veterans. It is estimated that there are over fifty-thousand homeless veterans on any given night. It is sad too see someone who literally fought and defended our country, and our lives with everything they had living in the streets, dying of hunger. It is mournful to see the government to just thank them with no reward and throw them into the streets like that.…

As you drive to work, walk to class, or bustle through busy streets, do you ever take the time to stop and look what is around you? Do you notice the older man that stands on the corner of the street wearing a blue and red cap, wrapped in a blanket because he has no winter coat? Perhaps you give a pity induced smile and pass by without noticing that his cap reads “Proud to be a U.S. Veteran”. Each day most Americans, including myself, fail to realize that nearly a quarter of our homeless citizens are U.S. veterans. Unfortunately, homelessness in our veterans has become a calamity nationwide; with high homeless, depression, and suicide rates, our heroes are not living the “American Dream” they fought for during their years of service.…

More Assistance for Homeless Veterans Homelessness is an unfortunate occurrence that can affect some Americans, including non-veterans and veterans. A veteran "is a person who served in the active military, naval, or air service, and who was discharged or released therefrom under conditions other than dishonorable" (qtd. in Perl 2-3). In Jason Davis ' blog entry "The ‘Invisible Monster ': A Homeless Female Veteran 's Journey to Take Back Her Life from PTSD…

Homeless Veterans With approximately one-fourth of the homeless population belonging to the veteran population (Burt, Aron, Douglas, Valente, Lee & Iwen, 1999), there is a need to determine how this specific group can be helped. By doing so, there is a possibility that homeless individuals from the general population can be helped as well. Cunningham (Aug 2009) emphasizes that working to eliminate homelessness in veterans may be part of the solution to ending homelessness in the United States. Being a large group, veterans take away resources from others which are homeless, who do not have the same support systems in place, through the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).…

The strongest person in the world might be able to tackle any physical obstacle, but mental stress can be much more difficult. The nuance with mental stress is that different environments affect people in different ways, and in different magnitudes. Cathy Davidson’s “Project Classroom Makeover”, Susan Faludi’s “The Naked Citadel”, and Malcolm Gladwell’s “The Power of Context”, all describe scenarios with environments that are either stressful and negative, or relaxed and positive. An individual’s identity is minimally impacted in positive environments and drastically affected in negative environments.…

What are your precious lessons in your life? I received unforgettable lessons from a book which is The last lecture by Randy Pausch. He was a professor of the Carnegie Mellon University, and he was diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer, so through his book, he hoped people to fulfill their dreams. As his hope, I got in touch with his stories and among them, the things that especially I want to tell you, are “Don’t complain, Just Work harder”, “Never give up” and “All you have to do is ask.”…

Education VS. Life While growing up we learn so many lessons that it is almost hard to remember all the information we learn. We were constantly learning something wherever we went. At school we learned our ABC’s, how to write our name, how to read basic text, and how to count to ten. Outside of school, we learned how to ride our bikes, and how to behave the proper way.…

I had Berta for general psychology during my first semester of college. When I found out she was teaching another Psych class in the Spring, I thought ‘I’ve got to take this class’. Berta is someone I look up to as a person, and she also has my utmost respect for being the most laid back professor that I have had so far here at Pellissippi State. She has made me feel like I actually matter in this world, and that I actually have a purpose. I know for a fact if I ever needed anything from her she would be there to support me and push me all of the way.…

My only non-embarrassing memory from middle school was set, of all places, in my eighth grade Health class. Presumably for the sexual wellness unit, we were watching a video about pregnancy. Beginning from conception, the film depicted detailed photos and videos of fetal development. While many were freaked out by the “alien babies” on the screen, I was enthralled. I tried not to sniffle as I cried from the beauty of it all and decided that I had found my life’s work.…

Living is learning. From birth to death, people live their lives gaining knowledge whether consciously or not. A child learns how to speak and walk unconsciously; youth consciously learn different ways through life as long as they have the will to live. Adults learn from mistakes and the vastness of life they see ahead. Though knowledge is immense and can be obtained in all places, people with the fear of welcoming the unknown will always be limited in the knowledge they obtain.…

Perhaps the best way to begin a train of thought about a topic is to outline what the topic technically is. A definition of intellectual development comes from the field of psychology. It says that intellectual development is best defined as a persons ability to think about and understand the world around them. Experiences they have lay the foundations for all future development (An Introduction to Intellectual Development). As stated in the last part of this definition, all your experiences prepare you for future, that is, if you are willing to learn from your past.…
