Feeling like 4 or 5 songs might not be enough, they learned a couple of more tunes in a rush at a local community center. They liked the idea of getting paid for performing because that’s what they love to do. Roy graduated from Wink High School in 1954 and applied for the fall semester at North Texas State College in Denton, Texas. While in college, two of his friends Wade Lee Moore and Dick Penner wrote the song “The Ooby Dooby”. The band would play at clubs, events, and even ended up appearing on a television show on Saturday afternoons. They were doing so well that the television network, KMID, gave them their own thirty-minute show on Friday nights. The band moved in together and renamed themselves “The Teen Kings” after playing a wide variety of Rock and Roll tunes. A local entrepreneur, Weldon Rodgers, soon approached Orbison. He was impressed with the band and wanted to schedule a recording session. The band agreed and the session was scheduled for March, 4, 1956. At the Norman Petty Studio in Clovis, New Mexico, the band recorded The Clovers” “Trying To Get To You” and “Ooby Dooby”. These singles were then released two weeks later.
