Roxbury Latin Community Analysis

Decent Essays
Although I know that this essay is not supposed to be of the persuasive kind, there is an issue that has been weighing on my mind as of late that I believe Roxbury Latin must address, and that is the lack of affinity groups on campus. As someone who is part of the LGBT community at an all-boys school, I have certainly felt excluded in some aspects of school life. People are not openly disrespectful to me or my community, at least not to my face, but I have certainly felt that far too often my presence has not been acknowledged. From discussions that we have in classes like personal development to assemblies that we have on topics pertinent to teens, whenever my community is discussed, it is always a sort of afterthought or not even included

(De)Constructing Gender: Unit 2, Prelim 2 Every person deserves the freedom to express themselves in whichever way that corresponds to what they feel, as long as it poses no danger on the well-being of another. As a result, they require safe and comfortable spaces to express themselves without worrying about physical and verbal attacks from those who are terrified by their lack of knowledge of who these people in question identify as. This illustrates what several LGBTQ people face on a daily basis. Therefore, we need to undo this injustice.…

The University of North Carolina at Pembroke has continuously represented the history and values of the local area. From the founding of the university as the Croatan Normal School in the late nineteenth century to its current state, the state supported university grew exponentially in numbers and capability. Originally established for the Lumbees of the area, then called Croatans, the Croatan Normal School served to educate a community lacking essential education. However, a testament to its current size, the North Carolina University sprang from a vision to make education more accessible to all individuals seeking it. From the beginning, the creation of a school proved to be beneficial to the local Native American community.…

In the essay “When Women Become Men at Wellesley,” Ruth Padawer discusses the debate of having transgender males at an all women’s college. She states how women seek these colleges in order to find empowerment in how women are the leaders on campus and making the decisions. This makes it harder on the students who are transgender men coming into a woman’s space. They often feel like outsiders and asked Wellesley College to change their motto of “sisterhood” to “siblinghood” and to use inclusive pronouns in classes. I chose this essay instead of “What is a Women?”…

Meeting with the Spectrum group today (an LGBTQ group of students on campus) was the essence of social advocacy that includes actions that would benefit individuals, groups, and the campus society itself. After speaking with Abby & Destinee from CICI, it is clear that separate LGBTQ groups need to work together and learn about each other. Hence, I am trying to be a liaison for the Prism group (LGBTQ faculty and staff), Spectrum, Student government LGBTQ senator, and the chairperson for the presence of LGBTQ on campus, along with Lucy Cross, to create a conversation between all the groups so they have more solidarity and a presence on campus. I look forward to see how this will work out. I believe that this will help challenge campus prejudice…

The club is compromised of an open-minded, diverse collaboration of youth who diligently fight for racial equality. Ethnic tension has always been extremely prevalent at my school--students often choose to segregate themselves by hues of skin pigmentation. At the root of this tension is restless silence on the most controversial topics, and thus Black Student Union was created to spark intelligent dialogue and debate on racial issues. Growth flourishes at every meeting, newfound respect and comprehension generated between students of vastly divergent backgrounds. I channel my pride in my black heritage into the empowerment of local black students and education on cross-racial understanding that takes place at BSU.…

My residential community has had a great impact on me. The community provides an ideal atmosphere to meet a variety of people. Not only does the residential community promote diversity and inclusion, but it has also granted me the unique opportunity of leading in a college atmosphere. While in the lobby, I met a racially and geographically diverse group of people.…

Pansies and Politics Mental health issues have hit a peak in recent years, it is as if everyone has some sort of psychological imbalance. “About 91 percent of college counseling center directors reported a rising trend of students with severe psychological problems on their campuses.” (Corley). To help those students’ campuses started labeling things with trigger warnings which are messages that say this has such content and could potentially distress someone. That’s a great idea for those struggling to overcome traumatic events, but there is a subset of these individuals, whose “trauma” remains questionable at best, who are trying to take that a step further by creating these so-called safe spaces.…

When I think of community, I think of something much more relevant to me as a teenager. I think about my school and the sense of community we have at Long Reach. The longer I’ve been there the more this sense of community and togetherness has grown on me, even through challenging times that faced us all. Supporting Point: When an Atholton student posted a blackface picture, frustration erupted through the halls of our school. This anger is not misplaced, it’s 2016 and we still have to deal with homages to minstrel shows of the 19th and 20th centuries?…

A current issue in education is the lack of support of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender students (LGBT). Transgender refers to a person’s gender identify--a person’s innate sense of being male, female, or somewhere in between( Banks& Banks, 2013). School are starting altering these practices: inviting same-sex couples to prom, providing gender neutral or individual bathrooms and locker rooms for transgender student, and including LGBT people and perspectives in the curriculum (McCollum, 2010). With acceptance, this population still face discrimination and prejudice. In school, LGBT students are harassed and bullied.…

Throughout history the Canadian education system has been utilized as a means to instil societal values and reproduce cultural norms. Researchers have referred to this phenomenon as the hidden curriculum (Jay, 2003). This hidden curriculum serves to secure the privilege of the dominant culture while subsequently marginalizing minority individuals. Normative discourses of gender and sexuality are promoted to students through the process of socialization. The process of constructing lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer/questioning (LGBTQ) individuals as deviating from the heterosexual norm is referred to as heteronormativity.…

Then just a year later same-sex marriage was finally legalized in the United States. The pride movement has been one of the largest growing civil rights movements this country has ever faced. It has had a long battle, but will continue to push forward. It 's not a battle for citizens of the United States, but the world as a whole striving for equal opportunity.…
