It consists of three major elements which are a person motivated to commit the offense, a vulnerable victim who is available and insufficient protection to prevent the crime (Cohen and Felson 1979). Routine activities theory mainly focuses on the characteristics of crime and the criminal activities. So, you are not focusing on how the offender acts. When you use this theory, you are getting a better understanding. Routine activities theory contributes to the phenomenon going on in Chicago. Seems that 90% of crimes I have read can go along with this theory. It seems that people are only committing the crimes they do because they understand that when certain people are around they cannot get away with it. There are so many crimes I could choose to say would be an good example but I was able to choose one. A good example to show how it relates to this would be about what happened to Ben Wilson. Wilson, just an innocent 17-year-old high school student, was shot on November 20, 1984 (Bentle 2018). He was on lunch break with his girlfriend and friend walking around (Bentle 2018). But it is important to know the stages of meth use that Natalie went through. Like she had stated everyone starts of snorting first. They don’t realize that once they get addicted and use to it that they need to do a different method. So, they decide to smoke it because now it’s giving them the high that they are looking for again. But once again they get used to the meth and it’s not getting them to the high they are looking for. So, they feel like it’s better to get it directly into their blood system. That’s when they decide their last option is to start ejecting.
